Paul - what was your time on a 125 GP? I think it was well into the teens? I know a r3 and ktm are no Gp bike but what would allow a gp bike go into the teens but not one of these? Better rider?

I was regularly in 16s, but I think 14s were possible with the very best rider. You can't really compare these 300s to a real GP bike. ever. They make similar power to a 125, and loads more torque but weigh double and have half the braking power or stiffness in the chassis. Different animals with very different limits.

    Re: Formula 300?

Penguin has money for 300's of all flavors at our NESBC rounds.... if can be $450 to win with payouts down to 5th place.

NESBC is 3 Saturday events at Canaan and 1 Sunday event at NHMS, and woven into the mix is a $1500 Team Championship. The main goal of the NESBC races is to create a low pressure, fun atmosphere for track day riders to experience what a race is like. There are 2 divisions (think on class for lightwieght and one for everything else) among 2 levels (non licenced/street bike and Nov/AM). We also have two "premier" classes each event, which are the entry level classes at LRRS (Formula 300 and Motard). We want to show people how fun it really is to race these bikes, and that you don't have to spend a boatload on a 600 or 1000cc 4 cylinder bike in order to do it. For the Unlicensed guys, they race on their track day bikes - no mods needed.

The team championship allows riders to add together the points of 4 riders who make up a team (plus Penguin has "mentors" to help guide them). The catch is that teams score points for your best finish in each class, which makes the ideal team one that races in 4 different classes. The idea is to get riders at different levels working together and pulling towards a common goal.

Michelin has the Power RS this year in small bike sizes - 110/70-17, 140/70-17 and 150/60-17. Sto will have them for LRRS events.

Hey guys. It is confirmed that the Yamaha R3 can compete at LRRS with the catalytic converter eliminated but retaining the stock exhaust. I'll be running mine stock first round because I don't have anyone lined up to do get it done. I'm actually curious who I would even ask to accomplish this task?

In theory any exhaust shop should be able to cut it out and weld in a replacement pipe. Quick googling I didn't come up with any 'kits' that weren't mated to a muffler.

I have Hindle making a bolt-on section that will allow you to cut out the cat and retain the stock muffler. Give me a call at Woodcraft tomorrow and I'll get those guys on the horn and we'll see where it's at.

We'll see how the R3 cat elimination thing works out. The inlet into the stock cat is so small that they are not even sure that they have tubing that small! We'll see how it goes.

On another note, we just worked out a design with them for a full system for either the R3 or the Ninja 300 starting at under $450! A release is coming soon - the R3 pipes are in stock now and the Kawasaki pipes should be ready in a couple weeks. We're stoked to have these coming!

    Re: Formula 300?

So how is this class going? I'm particularly interested in how things are shaking down between the R3's and RC390's. I've been thinking a lot about how I want to get back into racing, and perhaps even more so track days at the start. On paper it reads that the RC is the "racier" of the two; lighter, more power and torque, and better suspension out of the box. All this being said, this is basically just information fed to me from the Sport Rider, Cycle World, and that ilk. What's the real deal after y'all have been beating the piss out of them for a while now?

The other reason the KTM appeals to me a bit more is the taller seat height relative to the other bikes in the class. Does this still hold true after you've tweaked geometry for the track? I'm 6'2" so I'll need all the room I can get if I'm going to get into this class of bikes.

This season, top 3 in the relevant races have been Kawi, Yamaha, and KTM. Not always in that order. I've taken a first with my KTM. Shawns taken a couple first with the R3... Gunnar on his Kawi. The KTM has put down fastest lap (21) this season. And it's always very *very* close racing between the three of us.

KTM suspension out of the box is a joke (edit: the cup bike suspension is actually very good from what I've read... but not the street version). Don't be fooled. You still have to build it. Between a used bike plus mods I'm in 11K.

Re: seat height. If anything... I've raised mine from stock to get better geometry.

Out of interest, what kind of mods/upgrades have you done?

Having ridden both the RC and the R3, I think setting up the R3 is an easier road. I give the nod to the RC on motor, but they are very similar. Basically, they are competitive. Pick your poison.

I spent WAY less than that on my GS500E, before anyone makes accusations. Back when Production Class actually meant... production.

Pretty standard since you went the build it route, it adds up quickly that way. The $5-6k number always sticks in my head to build for a standard SS build, plus the cost of a bike.

After browsing WERA for a bit it seems my best bet is to just be patient and wait for the right bike to come up that some poor SOB has already built. Sounds like fair to say that as long as it's not a CBR300, anything else will scratch the itch. There is a very nicely built Ninja 300 up there now for $4700. Seems like if it's a street crash + salvage title, price is around $2500, then cost to build. I'll try and find one of these towards the end of the season when it's fire sale time. I want to come and play again.

After seeing how easy it is to rip the rearset mounts out of a Ninja... I'd be wary of buying a used one without researching frame costs.

Good to know. I'm hoping a built RC comes up for sale at the end of the season. Although stock suspension may be junk, I would much prefer to have an inverted fork on a small bike. Ideally someone has already spent the money on nice boingers and I can toss some springs in and ride.

On. The other hand KTM rearsets are a PITA to install. Rada and I are working on a solution. Giggidy

I mean yes the RC is the bike to get. Get it Formula 300?

My first time ever on a MW machine, went with UNSS as my garage mates run the class and figured it'd be fun times bullshitting after if they caught me from the AM wave. I'm two seconds off my UL times, and four seconds off the guy ahead of me but I did stay on the lead lap while bringing a potato to a gun fight.

I suppose I could have asked to run MW as a novice again?

Sam Greenwood and Ducette got their destroked R6s into the low 14s this weekend. Maybe the answer is to unplug a cylinder?
