Health insurance not covering my crash at LRRS???

    Hey guys,
So i crashed back in September and had to take the ambulance to Concord Hospital. At the time, I didn't have my wallet/insurance info with me, so when I got the bill in the mail, I called the hospital and they said they would resubmit to my insurance. (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan). Fast forward to now - I just opened a letter from the Concord Hospital which says...

"Blue Cross has denied the claim stating it must be billed to the auto carrier first. " Then a box is checked off that states "Third Party Liability (Auto or Liability insurance may be responsible).

If you believe you are not responsible for the balance listed above please contact:
Your insurance carrier to resolve the Issue.
Concord Hospital Customer Service as soon as possible to inform us of the outcome.

    WTF!!
Anyone else have an experience with this/ advice for me? A $6,000 hospital is a season ender for me next year

Contact BCBS of Michigan on the phone.

Explain to them that this was a motor vehicle accident, but it was on an uninsured vehicle on a closed course.

Your health insurance is just assuming that this will be picked up by your motorcycle insurance.

That's what it sounds like to me as well.

Thank you - wanted to get someone else's input before I admitted (?) that I was racing, or whatever.

I'll wait another half hour before I make the call, if anyone else wants to chime in.

You want to keep words like "race" or "competition" out of the discussion if possible.

Don't lie about it, but start with "Uninsured vehicle on a closed course".

Technically, it was off road... I'd say that. "off road while riding an uninsured vehicle".

Actually went through with this when my wife crashed her bike on the street. The paltry medical coverage street coverage comes with quickly was blown through just by the ambulance ride. Health insurance made us fill out a form noting that there was no other coverage left before they'd do anything.

Yeah, this is just your medical insurance trying to pawn the cost off to an auto insurance policy. Tell them it was not an auto accident, that you crashed off-road on your own. I always get asked if it was an auto accident when i go to the doctor, and i tell them no. I'm beginning to wonder, does this mean i go to the doctor too often for crashing?? lol

I’ve had this issue before. I simply state, “this was a sports related injury. It was not a vehicular accident”

If it’s his health insurance it shouldn’t matter whether he was racing or walking across the street.

I totally agree that it shouldn't.

That doesn't mean that it won't give them a reason to deny the claim.

There's a reason that things like racer insurance exist.

These damn mountain bikes we all ride sure are dangerous, I'm amazed our health insurance haven't stopped including them.

I've fought the same battle, ambulance ride from the track to Concord and all....once you get past the auto insurance thing they may start asking questions about the track, like whether you intend on pursuing litigation. They are a PITA with this, but just remember, racing is not against the rules! Eventually they will fuck off and pay it.

Just state that your Auto/moto insurance does not have Medical Coverage. That's all. Your Blue shield H/I tries to recover anything they can from the moto ins first before paying the rest. Tell them they can't.

BCBS always asks if any injury is from a vehicle accident or happened at work, so they can go after the other insurer and or Workman’s Comp.

FWIW most State Attorney Generals offices have an office to investigate health insurance problems. When you start asking for the person you are speaking with phone number, extension, title, etc and tell them it’s because you are going to call the AG’s office with a complaint, an amazing transformation occurs and they are suddenly your new best friend.

Some insurance companies do not cover motorcycle racing accidents. Its important to check with them prior to racing. Whereas track days is not racing but needs to be described as "Motorcycle Safety Training". Best of luck.....

    Incorrect.
Some auto/moto insurance companies might not cover the expenses for the motorcycle. A HEALTH insurance company will cover the health related expenses regardless where the injury occurred.

Actually, there are some health insurance policies with clauses waiving coverage for 'competition' events, so you do need to read the paperwork carefully.

Cut to the Chase: sounds like he has BCBS CT?

Believe AMA has policies available for events.

Seems like this is a growing problem.

Depends on the plan and the terms defining competition.
