    Hot - Heat - Over-heating

    Forecast for next event: HOT!

Bike (03 600RR) was stripped of all fans when I bought it. On a cool (like 55-60deg) day it runs about 185-190deg on the track.

Last July - The forecast was about the same - and I had issues with it over-heating. It would be running about 205+ on track (I would glance down a few laps in on the front straight)... as soon as I pitted out it would jump to 220+.

Curious if this is common with other similar bikes with no fans?

For the most part it didn't cause any huge problems - other than not being able to start it back up after a delay before my race...

My R6 still has the fans on it and after every race, when I pull into the pits it's running at 210-220 degrees w/the fans going. I put some engine ice in it for last round and it didn't really make too big a difference.

Take the fans off it cools better on track. Just have a fan in the pits when you come back. It will be fine.

I dont use engine ice. I know its now and approved thing but it doesnt dry like water. I use water and koolaid. It works fine.

Good to know. I was curious if there was any real difference w/ and w/o a fan...

Forecast looks brutal right now - 96 on Friday and 91 on Sat - and it's always a few degrees warmer on the track.

I never even thought to bring a fan - good idea.

The fan on my 05 600RR doesn't even go on till 220, as long as you don't go above 240 - 245 you should be all set. I know the bikes oil light or something comes on when its too hot and should be turned off.

one time sitting in traffic at Hampton beach it got up to 237, i turned around and left but then checked out the manual later to be sure and 240 -245 is the hottest you want to let it get i guess before you really want to shut it down.

my bike usually stays at 169-175 (on a cold day) to 185 - 195 (on a really hot day) while riding and only hits 220ish when stopped at lights.

Make sure your radiators are washed out good. A light film of dust will make them less efficient at transferring heat. Another trick to dropping temps after you come in off the track is to mist some water into the radiator as the bike is running. This will drop the temp quickly.

With the fans mounted, there is never a worry of cooking the engine.

Saving a pound of weight in this department isn't worth it, IMO.

What are you saving - a lb or 2? Where's the benefit in club racing? Not worth maybe overheating on in a possible hold on the grid on a hot, humid day.

I really think these guys strip the fans off their bikes because a couple of the fast guys *may* have removed them but what people seemingly don't realize is those bikes have an additional radiator piped in to suppliment the OEM cooling system in the cases where the fans are removed.

I never understood it myself but to each their own I suppose.

My bike came that way. It hasn't been as issue to date, so I haven't even thought about putting one on.

I use water and water wetter in the SV.

Your bike also is not an inline 4. The two center bores would be my main concern if I were to consider tossing the fan assy.

    Ditch the thermostat.

Good call. I don't think I'd run an I4 without one.

OK I found when racing cars that you needed a thermostat OR at least a washer to restrict the flow or the water circulated too fast and didn't stay in the radiator long enough to be effective. This is not the case in MC's?

I found the same. We actually ran a 160 degree t-stat to keep the engine at the right temp.

I've removed the t-stat from the race hawk and manage the water temp by strips of duct tape. 170-180 is my goal.

My 04 CBR 600rr will run 225 on track with the fan and t-stat.

Anybody know when we can enter the track for this weekend? Better there than the city.

    Re: Hot - Heat - Over-heating

Without the fan is better cooling while moving at a reasonable speed. The fan only works to circulate air when the movement of the bike isn't doing it. 600rr typically run at 200-225.

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
