    Why I'm cranky

771 Racing - Well there's your problem right there...

This is why I'm having mood swings. The good news is I was able to save my compression tester fitting that was previously stuck in #4 without removing the head. The bad news is the head has to come off anyways.

Well damn. Intake & exhaust valves at the same time?

Given how nasty the piston crowns look, it MAY be carbon between the valves and seats but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

And here I thought you just always needed a hug... fingers crossed its just carbon build up but that is a lot of air passing through

Maybe no need at this point, but would it be possible to isolate the leak further by blocking off the intake to see if exhaust leak is actually bad? Or removing the pipe?

    Re: Why I'm cranky

When I tested each cylinder I made note of the order of air leak for each. On #2 through #4 it was easy, the only leak by wasn't enough to register on my gauge, and it was clearly past the rings. On #1 it's intake, then exhaust, and then possibly some by the rings. With intake/exhaust if any goes by, it's bad so no point trying to isolate to see if there is much of a change. Now the only right thing to do is drop the motor and pull the head. Clearance on the intakes was within spec so I don't expect to find it's just a carbon issue on them, one exhaust was way loose so the chance is there but, given how badly the intakes are whistling it doesn't matter, still gotta pull the head.

I'm a bit disappointed that Yamaha set things up so that you can't pull the head with the motor in the bike but I suppose they were going for as compact as possible so... how often do you normally have to pull a head these days normally?

If it's anything like my GSXR, dropping the engine and pulling the head can be done solo in two hours.
