I'm going to keep this short as my memory is lacking thanks to exhaustion.
Wed - Prep work: I've been fighting little issues with the GS since I got it, electrical, carburation and fuel supply related. The electrical stuff I've mostly sorted, along with fuel supply, the carbs are where I'm weak and trying to fix them at the track between races was getting old, so I got some dyno time. Went on the dyno Wed evening, and after about 7 pulls, I got rid of the midrange stumble I was having, the bike would finally pull clean from bottom to top.
Friday - Arrive on site, and notice Quartergig hasn't arrived... not good, he was supposed to pick his bike up from the shop Friday afternoon so he could get here about the same time I did... Unload, then off to my inlaws to visit and crash.
Saturday - 1st practice, feel out the new carb settings, and hey, I don't have to think about them, or try to ride around them. I relax and enjoy the session. 2nd practice, more of the same, just get out and ride. Feels good, times were down to 1:37, which if I follow my normal pattern means I might be improving on my personal best this weekend. (1:36.0 in GTL last time out.)
Race 1 - LW Sportsman - Bike ran ok till 4 laps in, started breaking down on top. Crud, main jet is too small, I didn't get it hot enough on the dyno to spot, oh well, ride through it. Midrange problem is gone though, I'm actually able to start putting up a fight and loving it. 1:35.5, the times they are a tumbling... Finshed 6th out of 13. Almost a .5 index!
Saturday night - scramble to work the carbs over, get everything done after it's too dark to test, go home anxious over weather or not I made the right jetting choices, don't want my midrange problem back, and don't want to kill the motor in the GTL.
Sunday - Head out for 1st practice, only running on one cylinder, never even make it to the hot pit. Come back in and start trying to diagnose why I'm loosing spark intermittently. Problem re-occurs for second practice, I get pissed, throw some tools, calm down and re-assess. New plugs plus some tweaks under the tank, and I cross my fingers for the GTL.
GTL - Booyah! Bike runs like a top, no issues, no worries, head down, speed found. Finished 11th out of 18, 1:33.9.
PTwins - Bike continues it's smooth running (Have I got it sorted finally?!) and this race is a fricken blast. I diced it up with Tomato for a few laps before finally getting him, then move on to tackle Eric Boos on his Buell. That wasn't fair. I came up on him in 12, slammed the bike over to come up his inside... and the next thing I know I'm looking at rapidly receeding exhaust pipes and helmet.
It went something like this...
GS500E We're closing in on him, sir. In less than minute, teh Buell will be ours.
Me (head down, full crouch) Good. Prepare to attack.
GS500E Prepare to attack.
Me On the count of three. One, two....
Eric Boos takes off down the front straight.
Me Wait. (Sits up) What happened? Where is he?
GS500E I don't know, sir. He must have hyperjets on that thing.
Me And what have we got on this thing, a Cuisinart(tm)?
GS500E No, sir.
Me Well, find him catch him!
GS500E Yes, sir. (over CAMLine bus) Prepare bike for light speed.
Me No, no, no, light speed is too slow.
GS500E Light speed, too slow?
Me Yes, we're gonna have to go right to ludicrous riding.
ALL gasp. Even the two spectators in the bleachers.
GS500E (gasp) Ludicrous riding? Sir, we've never gone that fast before. I don't know if I can take it.
Me What's the matter, GS, chicken?
Head down, and now I'm on a mission. I start trying to up my corner speed everywhere looking for a way to get around that Buell, and eventually get him by late braking into 3, at which point the race is on to keep him behind me.
Last lap, as I come out of 12 I went full stupid tuck, left arm back, feet up off the pegs, I'm running a land speed record attempt at Bonneville baby. Turns out it was a good thing, Rick saw me and dropped the hammer on his 620, and closed quickly, but I just edged him out at the line.
6th out of 8 in PTwins, so not a spectacular placing, but I'l take the 1:33.3 that came out of it.
Monday - Turn 1a goes Vintage. Stuck around for the USCRA races as I got permission to run in Formula EX. Had fun in practice, passing and being passed by a whole different set of bikes. It's amazing to see some of those machine just sit up and GO despite their age. Don't have lap times as we weren't running transponders, but I'm fairly certain I dropped my times again trying to chase down the class champion. I couldn't do it, but had a great time trying, all while dicing it up constantly along the way. Finished 3rd, brought home a trophy and made a ton of new friends.
