    Lightweight or Motard

As the says I’m looking to be sold on one to have as a new-to-me race bike for the ‘19 season.

I did a full season on a junkyard SV down in NJMP and banged it up pretty bad as any rookie season should be. I sold it to fund something a little more stable and less rusty/corroded. I’ve owened a 400sm for the streets and loved it. I found a killer deal on some race ready motards and curious if there is anything I’ll have to worry about if I transition or should I stick to the classic SV route and just buy another?

SVs tend to be gas and go bikes, change the oil occasionally. They have a good number of classes to be competitive in.

Motards have a crap ton of classes to be competitive in, but do require active maint to stay reliable including engine tear downs every few seasons at a minimum.

    Re: Lightweight or Motard

If I had to do it all over, I think I’d just go with a second gen sv or Kawi 650 and be done with it.
I love a motard, but they get spendy(er) to go fast on.

*ive owned and tracked all 3 mentioned in this post.

I'll agree with what's been said. I hated riding the SV that I tried, but only rode it for a session.

Newer 450's are the way to go if you buy a motard. They blow up less. The hp keeps going up and up on every model that comes out, though, so you'll be buying a new bike or building up an engine on an older bike to keep up.

Sv is probably the cheaper way. Lol

The motard field is growing fast, and you can use it to race in more different types of racing. I started racing on a SV and now almost exclusively on a motard. They are more reliable than people lead on and they are the most fun to race.
