I posted this in bike maint. but no response. I was wondering what the hot tires are to get nowadays. Are they still the Mich P=sports or is there something else that people like better?

It's a tough question to answer. EVERYONE has their own preference. Right now I'm running the new D208's on my TL-R and I love 'em. Some people hate 'em though...

Probably not getting much response 'cuz many probably feel it's a loaded question. Kinda like 'what's the best oil to run' typa question...

More or less he's looking for a tire that will perform well on the track (VIR in particular) but will be something he can leave on for the street. It's also for a 1000cc machine.

You can never go wrong with a nice set of Dunlops D208's.

HOWEVER, Karaya1 (Dave) here on the NESR board can usually hook you up with a sweet deal on some medium compound Michelin DOT race tires which will be fine for the street and will ROCK at the track.

If you listen to Degsy you might end up crashing twice in 1 lap

My bad, if you want tires that you can go 3 laps then crash listen to Degsy.

If your not a track rider go with what ever tires you want because you will have nothing to compare them to. It seems like all tires these days are pretty good unless you are a hell of a rider and need race tires for the track day.

No more Pilot Sports, I do have Michelin Pilot Powers.

The D208 is an old tire. I would mount Super Corsa's before those things....

I can get you a sweet deal, but who is going to mount them? I can't have you bragging you bought them from me because I may sell tires to that dealer and POOF there goes the business.

If you can keep it on the down-low, I'll hook you up.

If you want DOT race tires, I can do that too.

    Let me know!

that would be awesome. I was thinking of going after the Mich's anyway. Just wanted to know if things like the pirelli's or something else was doing good. As for the mounting I was probably just going to use that man Jim that everyone around here seems to think is the best deal going. Don't worry, I'm not looking to become a tire man myself. Any help would be much appreciated.

And here within lies the dilemna of such a question...

The 208ZR's I thought were a completely new design as of last year. No?

Not to jack the thread, but I was planning to run takeoffs for my school and first couple/few race weekends. A friend said it's a good idea since I'll be getting seated on the track and not be using the full potential of a fresh race tire, so it'd just be burning money. I emailed some guy that's was dropping sets for like $50. Good idea? Bad idea? What do I want to look for in a decent takeoff? How can I tell if the rubber is in bad shape or in good enough for me shape? I might have to pick up some of these on the net, so I can't do that fingernail test someone mentioned, and I don't remember what it really was either.

Ask Bryan (bentbryan) if it's a good idea to use take-offs for racing. Ok for penguin school and trackdays yes, but not for racing.

I agree. A rider took them off for a reason, you don't want to start out learning to go slow.

It all depends on what the take offs look like I did 15's on a set of Jeward's old tires. One thing to remember tires are cheaper then fixing your bike do to a crash because of shit tires.

Yeah, but you are fast and erratic

Gerard is notorious for getting rid of tires before they are finished. He must have money to burn.

Listening to Lew about tires is like asking the slowest guy at the track how to go fast.

Like I said todays tires are all good. You can pick Dunlop, Pirelli, Metzler, or Pilot powers and you should be happy with them on the track. Unless you are a great racer like Lew who needs the special "Magic tires" the pros use.
