LRRS Allowed Coolants? (REMINDER: Spot checks @ R7)

So as I strolled over to last round's rider's meeting I was all self-satisfied for putting engine ice in my bike right beforehand.

In the meeting though, I *think* the official (was that Graham / xsilicone kid?) said that propylene glycol was not allowed, and that only water or water/water wetter was allowed? I couldn't hear too well and want to make sure I'm not mixing up my diol's here...

All I could find in the rulebook is that a list of approved coolants is available at tech...

Per the people selling the stuff: "Engine Ice hi-performance coolant is legal in CCS and ASRA road racing and permitted at many tracks around the world."

So I suppose that it could be NHMS or LRRS specifically that gave it the thumbs down....

I just want to make sure I heard correctly before I drain $50 worth of coolant out of my system.

Also, let this post serve as a reminder to people that if you have a "non-approved" coolant in your bike, on top of the small chance of crashing and being the d-bag that spills slippery stuff all over the track, at the next round there's a somewhat higher chance that you get picked for a random coolant spot-check during tech.

    water ONLY.
dont know how many times this has been addressed.
you're gaining nothing from using that overpriced crap.
keep it simple. water & water wetter.
then drain and use antifreeze for the winter if your garage isnt heated.

I want to say it's not legal. But we'll wait for Graham to chime in.

I am sure that the stuff is slippery as hell. Rub some between your fingers. If it's slick, and difficult to wipe off, like green coolant, don't run it. Legal or not, if you spill slippery stuff you're the d-bag.

Your two allowed additives to water in LRRS as per the NEAR list, 2013:

    Water Wetter
    Maxima Cool-Aide

19.10 Liquid cooled engines and their radiators must be
flushed. Only water or an approved cooling system
additive may be used. The use of anti-freeze is subject to a
$50 fine. A list of approved additives is available at Tech.

Cool-Aide and water wetter are cooling additives, not coolants.

The only approved coolant is water, and small amounts (the amount recommended by the manufacturer) of coolant additives are allowed. The rule would be slightly clearer if is said "Only water with or without an approved cooling system additive may be used."

Well, it's not against the rules to run Dasani as your base, if you think that special mineral blend is what your motor craves?

Yeah, unfortunately I came to that same conclusion on the way home from buying it.

Yep, I'm sure you can see where this is confusing, considering that engine ice seems to be allowed by CCS - and that section in the rulebook means nothing unless you have the list of approved additives (which you apparently can only get your hands on in person, when tech is open)...because couldn't you consider "engine ice" to be an additive (labeled as "pre-mixed with distilled water")? I did a quick search on the forum and was surprised I didn't quickly find something definitive - more track day riders asking about it than anything.

I've got it now....looks like I'll be draining the radiator. Anyone interested in "take off" coolant...only used for 3 races....plenty of heat cycles left....perfect for a track day rider!

Joking aside, thanks to everyone for the guidance.

I've used unsweetened lemonaid Kool-Aide to clean a dishwasher before? If you were up for a pump rebuild after it'd be one hell of a cooling system flush.

Not recommended...when I was growing up, a friend's little brother peed on his little air-cooled 2-stroke dirt bike.

For 2 weeks, nobody could even stand to ride behind him on the trails. The only reason it was only for 2 weeks is because he drove the 3 foot tall bike into a 3 1/2 foot deep mud filled rut and ruined it. Not sure if that speaks to the frequency of stupid shit that he did or how bad he wanted to get rid of the bike...

You'd be amazed how pungent urine gets when it reaches engine temp.

i ran straight cool-aide from maxima. its a coolant, not an additive, but it doesnt have the poly-gly (or what keeps shit from freezing) so it still needs to be drained for the winter. its purple and easily identified as such by tech.

For one thing, it doesn't have a corrosion inhibitor.

What would be in distilled water that could result in corrosion?

A severe lack of anything to counter pure water's affinity for oppositely charged ions for starters.

That, and the fact that it's impossible to reasonably guarantee your cooling system was 100% clean to begin with.
