    Motard Racing Questions

    Hey Folks,

This post is more directed to the motard-inclined racers in LRRS. I've got a 510SMR, and by jove, I'm going to race it next year. Question is, what do I need to pass el techo?

Saftey wire is no big deal, but catch can? I've been using a old red-bull can, with a myriad of hoses into it for the trackdays that require it. Will that pass? Or do I need a "real" supermoto catch can?

Also, my current plastics have a spot to put numbers and so forth on each side. Will that work? Or am I going to have to put those god-awful placards on the back making me look like some chinese delivery service?

Also, what classes can one race in with a 501cc thumper? I know supersingles, but LWSS? Maybe even dice it up with the 250's?

So many questions, and so little answers from the LRRS rulebook.

    Motard Racing Questions

I'm not a motard guy, but I can answer most of these. Safety wire per rule book. Do it before the race season as it takes longer than you'd think.

Catch can: redbull can will pass, but something with a cap that is clear is preferable. THat way you can keep tabs on what is filling it and when.

If 8 inch numbers will fit up front, and 6 inch on the sides, you's all set. If not, they may hassle you.

singles can run in almost ANY class, no cc limit. You're banned from 125gp, but that's about it. SS I'm not sure of. That may have a streetbike restriction, but I think your model is street legal? The lightweight classes make the most sense, but some fast guys will run their motard for rain in the big bike classes.

    Motard Racing Questions

Yea, the Husky is DOT legal from the factory.... maybe it could go in production twins? I mean if they let 500cc twins in, whats wrong with a 501cc thumper? If they give me grimace about the extra 1cc, then I'll just put the smallest head gasket I can on, while keeping proper squish.

I've already started saftey wire. I know it takes a hella long time. Plus, I'm pretty green at it, so I have to do it a few times.

Thanks for the tips Paul. I will look out for you and your "hazing" though.

Doh! I wasn't suposed to help you! Oh yeah, you're banned from ptwins. The whole TWIN part is hard to overcome with a single!

You can certainly try your hand against SVs and 250s in the LWGP class...

lwsportsman, super singles, thunderbike and the motard only race are your best options. The redbull catch can is fine. When in doubt lockwire it. And here is what you will also want to figure out, there is a rule about belly pans that hasn't been enforced on motards but that is most likly gonna change so make sure that you come up with a solution for that. if you search in the pits section there is a whole thread going about it an the solutions us sumo guys are coming up with....even if they don't enforce it next season its safer for you to have one so just do it! I look forward to seeing another track pirate up there

Belly pan?! On a 'tard? Are you kidding me?!

If I have to safty-wire a turkey pan to the bottom of my bike before every race, I think I might just have to go ride NASMoto instead of LRRS! Thats rediculous!

But on the other hand, I can see how having a 'tard put a con-rod through the front of the case, and spew oil all over the place could be a bad thing. But you know what, that'll happen with or without a belly pan.

It sounds like they dont like motards.

They don't like repeated track oilings with synthetic oil and people getting fucked up after seven bike pile ups due to said oilings. If the bikes didn't pop so often, they would surely not be talking bellypans for motards...

    Motard Racing Questions

that 7 bike pile up did not involve a motard! but there were a few other accidents that did. It hasn't been enforced on motards yet. I'm talking about an overgrown skid plate that will go up a little further in front of the motor to help if you blow the con-rod (which happened to billy this year going into turn 3). It's a saftey issue for everyone who races on the track. I'm building one and using it even if they don't end up enforcing the rule because i don't want to be the reason someone else or myself gets hurt.

Everyone is free to make whatever decisions they want but i think after what happened to jersey its a small inconvenience we can all deal with for the saftey of our friends. I like drinkin beer with my bros and not calling to see if their out of fuckin ICU.

Sorry if was just preachy just now. I usually just say fuck off or call people fags.

    Motard Racing Questions

Nah, I'm down with a elongated skid-plate as a modified "belly" pan. I agree its a small price to pay for the saftey of fellow racers... I'll probobly modify the default one from Husqvarna, and extend it a bit.

But usually motors dont blow up like that. But motards are high maintenance. If your not replacing the piston every year, and checking/replacing the rod and crank bearings, then your neglecting it. My husky only has 50 hours on it, but 30 of them are track, so she's getting a complete teardown over the winter, complete with plastigauge and runout checks.

Anything less, and your risking something like this:

There are some nice perks. Season tickets to disney and shit. All in all, they treat their employees pretty damn well. But they really work us some times. Yesterday I pulled a 14 hour day during a power upgrade in one of our data centers. Really though, I only watch supermoto, wsbk, and motogp. ESPN covers none of those, so I could care fricken less.

The only cool thing I can say that happened here, is when they we're shooting a sportscenter commerical, and had a mascot doing donuts in our building's parking lot in the morning, in a NASCAR race car. (I think it was Jeff Gordon's?) That was pretty damn cool.

Actually Alex, Supersingles is one of the races you'd be interested in & it runs at the same time as PTwins.

    Motard Racing Questions

    Supersingles
    Thunderbike
    Lightweight Sportsman
    GTL
    Motard

Those are some of the most popular races for running a Motard in and being competative.

As for numbers, the rules say 6" numbers in the rear and 8" numbers up front... I wouldn't worry about the 8" number up front and run all 6" numbers (you buy them in packs of 3 anyways) as long as they are properly spaced (1" between them) and easy to see. Just go through tech with a group of experts and if they question your numbers, just start pointing to other bikes

As for the catch can, when I was running my YZ450, I had a water bottle inside the airbox and had all the overflow fuel lines, crankcase vent and coolant overflow all going into it. Once it started to collect fluids, I'd just take it out, toss it in the trash and put in a new one. You can do the same thing with a redbull can.

Leave the motor stock and it won't blow up with proper maintenance. Start adding engine internals and get your checkbook ready because not only are you going to spend a fortune on the upgrades, you're going to spend a fortune again when it blows up. Just ask Heath, with both bikes
