    motard tire choice

currently im using slicks in the frt and rear i dont experience too much chatter but comming into turn 1 and around 9 is the most. I know a few of the fast guys are using a d.o.t frt tire and slick rear... any feed back?

Not all slicks are created equal. What brand? And what kinda pace are you running?

(Not that I have the ability to answer the question, but those that can could use that kinda info.)

I don't know any of the fast guys that do that...

Motards chatter in the fast stuff. Try lightly holding down the rear brake to adjust your bikes geometry in these turns and eliminate the chatter. That's something the fast guys do.

    Slicks front and rear mang.

Slick rear, DOT front is definitely the way to go for fast tracks like NH.

Well there you have it. Mike and Shane are undeniably fast.

I bought my motard from Jeff with full slicks, and that's what Eric/Jeff now run on the CRF, along with JayRoot.

    Point: Seems there are options.

Mike can you elaborate on the reason for the dot front?

Without getting too crazy on an explaination, Paul is correct. Don't think the chatter completely goes away, it just gets moved to a different level. With slicks on, my bike chatters brutally at 20's. As soon as I put a dot on the front, no more chatter until low 18's and it's not that bad (different frequency).

    Re: motard tire choice

So I'm going to bring this thread back from the brink. I noticed on the 520 that I was getting chatter all over the place, the biggest points being past the apex in 6, and down through 9. I was only turning 26s, and told I was way soft coming out of 6, I should be downshifting and hammering out, instead people thought I was lugging.

    Dunlop slicks front and rear.

Tire, suspension, or just a technique problem? What should I be looking at first?

Still running my SuperSoft slicks front and rear. Stock triples. Chatter isn't a issue. Running low 20's and high 19's on the New Loudon.

That was my first thought. Off-set triples completly changed the feel of my front end.

Check tire pressures first. What are you running hot? If I remember correctly I was running 32 or 33 in the front and 27 or 28 in the rear. And more throttle earlier helps a lot too.

What brand tire? I was running dunlops last year, and those were hot temps. This year on Bridgestones im running more like 28-29 front and I think 26 rear, but those are cold temps. Every tire is manufactured differently (stiffer or softer carcass, different durometer rubber, etc) so the pressures vary a lot. I think I remember someone saying (might have been Denno) he was running around 23-24 in the Pirellis.

I get a bit of chatter in 9 and before the apex of 10. not enough to be 'a big problem' thou. I just ride thru it. I've had it worse before.

    Re: motard tire choice

If i remember correctly, I was running 30.5/28-28.5 COLD front and rear on the Katoom. Dunlop Slicks 16.5 front. The would put my front hot pressure about what Brian was running as well. I never really had bad chatter problems anywhere and was running mid 20's, low 21's when I left. The offset triples helped a ton as well.

Remember to keep your hands REALLY loose on the bars. Because of the leverage of the bars on these bikes and the lightweight, you can really mess yourself up with too tight a grip

    Re: motard tire choice

I hear the fast guys are running a dot front and a slick rear. I know nothing of this chatter that you speak of. Maybe it's there and I just ride around it, or maybe I'm just so fat and weight the bike down that I don't get it, or maybe I'm just slow??

Can anyone explain this "chatter" stuff?? Maybe I'm getting it and I just don't pay attention.

    Re: motard tire choice

    Josh,

Try a set of Pirellis and never look back. I haven't experienced chatter.

Just switched a dunlop, a bridgestone and a michelin motard racer to pirellis this year - dunlop guy dropped 1.5 secs and eliminated chatter, bridgestone guy experiences slight chatter in 9 after feeling like a jackhammer on the stones in a bunch of places and michelin gent has dropped a 1/2 second and is getting no chatter at all.

Stop by the trailer and let's be even closer friends...
