My motor ate an air filter screw

After my lowside in the wet during race 2 on Sunday April 27th I resarted the bike and jumped back in but I heard and odd noise coming from below...Got the bike back to the pits and couldn't get it to turn over. Gino, Scott James and others came over to help. I wanted to thank you guys for the effort. I hoped it was something to do with the starter or starter gear , but no such luck. Last weekend I pulled off the airbox and saw that the filter was missing a screw, then pulled off the stacks to look inside the intake, I saw the shiny bastard sitting on my piston...So I hope everyone has a great race weekend, I'll be jealous, in the garage replacing the bent valve and other associated components that the screw took out in it's travels...

Probably just mashed up the valves in that cylinder a bit. Though if it scored the head/piston/cylinder too much, you've got a bigger job on your hands. Hope it turns out well, keep us updated!

Is your R6 a 2006??? If so, you might be in luck.

On the 06, Yammy recalled the air filters because some people had the screws work themselves loose and fall in the engine. If yours is eligible for that warranty work and you didn't get it yet, you might be able to argue with them to fix it.

Yeah it's on 06, I'll definitely have to look into that.. The piston has a couple of marks on it and so does the bottom of the head not too bad though, one valve took most of the hit and the other 3 valves look fine.

Oh man, Sorry to hear Tim. Is sounded nasty thru 1-1a. Hope you can get her fixed.

Screw in the filter? Is this a screw that holds the air box to something?

I have the used motor from my 06 R6 that ate the aluminum off the head and a couple of valves... damn that 93.1!

If you just need a valve or two to get it back running.... let me know. But I would guess the piston is pretty bad and maybe the bearings (rod and maybe crank) if the thing wouldnt turn over. That screw mighta caused a sudden stop.

If you are looking to try and get some warranty help and you dont have a Yamaha dealer that you work with., Ryan Keenan is a service manager at Derry Cycle in Derry NH. He races at Loudon and is familiar with the 06 R6 airfilter bolt recall. Maybe he can help you out with Yamaha. Most dealers will just say.. ahhh racebike.. no warranty! Mostly because they dont want to work inside motors. So sometimes it helps if you have a racer who works at a dealership and that dealership that is looking for work!

Either call Derry Cycle Derry Cycle Yamaha and Suzuki Dealer NH - New Hampshire or PM me for his number.

Re: My motor ate an air filter screw

after rereading your initial post.... "I resarted the bike and jumped back in but I heard and odd noise coming from below...Got the bike back to the pits and couldn't get it to turn over."

I would say you porbably will need a little "race engine builder" love. the head is going to need to be cleaned up and the piston replaced. Also will need to have the rod checked and the bearings as well.

If you get no help from Yamaha, I would call and speak with these guys.

New England Performace 603-642-6977 Pat Doyle, Kingston NH
Sweeney Racing Engines 978-290-8374 Sean Sweeney, Saugus MA

AND IF you get help from Yamaha warranty wise... I would try and see if there is a way to get the dealer and these guys to work together to get your engine back to 100% without cutting any corners.

    Good Luck
    Scott

Re: My motor ate an air filter screw

    Gino
It's one of the screws that holds the filter in the airbox..

    Scott,
Thanks for the all help and advice and contacts, Unfortuneately about the warranty work with the local dealer, I had the motor out head off and parts orderd before I knew that was a warranty issue, and they know i race. I wouldn't trust them with my motor anyway, They have a hard enough time ordering the right parts! Maybe I can get a little $$ back from Yamaha for the parts, but I'm not holding my breath. I was in a hurry to get the motor back together so I could race this weekend, but it doesn't look good anyway

I'll definitely give Ryan a call, I would like it back at 100%
