Motor work, mod & overall racing advice wanted

Considering doing some SS legal motor work to the SV... Deck the heads, angle job on the valves, nothing too major... who should I talk to?

Also wondering what other things I should consider doing this winter to improve overall performance and where my priorities should be.
Lightened rear rotor? Wave/full floaters up front?

So far here's it's current state as far as performance stuff goes.
    Ohlins shock (will be rebuilt)
Stock front end with Springs & Emulators (will also be rebuilt)
    Scotts steering damper
    PCIII
    Leo Shorty slip-on

Everything else, as far as the chassis & motor are concerned, is pretty much all stock.

I'd like to get some words of wisdom from the veteran racers on here. (Paul, Graham, Degsy, Gino etc? You guys know who you are )
Given where I'm at in my racing "career" what do you think my next step should be? What should I concentrate on in 2010?

Sounds good Pete, If Pat Doyle is still around, he's the man for SV work. I think the valves and decking the head is the ticket. I'm not sure what else is SS legal.

Not a Vet racer and you are faster than me but I love my wave rotors! Plus switching to rains with the stockers makes for easier/softer braking.

Pete are you planning on getting a custom map done with your PCIII, or just find something online?

Already has a custom map from RJ's in Nashua. But with the added motor work I'll probably bring it up to him again.

Brake lever is a little squishy and a little vague feeling, but it stops on a dime.
Was thinking about going w/ the rotors to reduce a little unsprung rotating mass.

Give ol' Mr. Spears a call and bend his ear for a while. He loves to talk and you won't find anyone more knowledgeable about SVs and where to focus your upgrade dollars.

JD Hord is one sick puppy as well. He's the cat that does/provides the go-fast goodies for the Hawk-gang, but JD's very very well versed in v-twins in general. Lots of neat stuff (dynos and the like) on his site: www.hordpower.com

Think you have a decent plan outlined. Get to it.

I have a guy in Hudson NH that builds all our race motors now, he is unreal in detail, very fast and his prices are the best i have ever seen. Call me if you need the details. If spending money isnt aproblem, i would get some gafler wave rotors as well. Good brakes always come in handy at loudon.

How about spending the money on the GMD "sweet numbers"? Didn't see it listed anywhere and should be worth the scratch.

Re: Motor work, mod & overall racing advice wanted

sweet numbers helped my sv a ton.
the wave rotors were cool, but as far as braking i think the galfer "superbike" lines were the best upgrade and surpassed the difference felt from reducing the unsprung weight. should ghelp with the squisjy lever as well. you using the good motul fluid and changing frequently?
motorwork could help at your level for sure. i talked to pat based on pauls recomendation when i had mine, he can set you up nice (unfortunately my cash windfall was nmore of a draft so it never happened).
anything else you can do to reduce weight. check out BRG racing, lots of aluminum go-faast stuff. i also did what ever i could to reduce weight on my own. found a wiring diagram to build a race harness online, cut about 8 lbs of wiring off the bike for the price of free.

pete, check hard racing too. i've ordered most of my small stuff (oil, filters, etc) from solomotoparts because of the prices & free shipping. but hardracing has killer deals on suspension and more expensive upgrades.

Dan had all of the motor work on my SV done at New England Performance and it was checked and given a huge thumbs up by Sweeny Motor Works right before he had sold it to me.

I know I'm not much of an endorsement, but I can vouch that my SV is pretty friggin' quick, even with my fat ass on it.
