Holy fucking shit... that was brutal.

I don't know much about racing, but I agree with the others that they should have red flagged this. The guy went down adn didn't get up quickly. Turn 2 is tough to see around because of the wall, and if guys are coming around there 3 and 4 abreast, they may not be able to maneuver away from a wrecked bike/people... as can be seen in the vid...

    Man that sucks... poor guys.

That was one of quite a few tough days in my six years of racing. The sport can be as brutal as war at times... (not that I'd really know). The guy who was hit took up racing!

I think it's a sore subject with some people, not exactly sure why. I saw it for the first time on some "you gotta see this shit" show. I was watching the previews and said "wow, that looked just like T2" Sure enough, it was.

The next day I asked about it on the NEAR list and just about got blasted out of my seat. Didn't mean to bring up any bad memories, just wanted to know who was on the BCM bike that went down. I wasn't racing back then, took Penguin in 2002 (I think).

My GF has filmed some of my novice races from that section of the stands, you can get almost the entire track from there. She watched it with me and it freaked her out. I crashed in the same spot - (LWGP, race 5, Oct 3, 2004) and got hit square in the back with an SV. I think she'd have fainted if she was filming then....glad she wasn't.

Phat Twin was there for it though, loaded my trailer for me (and made my arm move again - thanks bro.)

Yeah, that was an ugly one. The cornerworker, Rob, is OK now though! He is no longer cornerworking but his wife is still racing.

Rob is a super nice guy, and his wife Ann is just great to have around. Don't know about Mark though (a little odd that one).

My wife is sitting just over my shoulder and I know the video, not playing that one in front of her!! First time I saw it I started wondering why corner workers didn't wear helmets?

That is one of the dumbest questions i've heard asked on here in a long time!!! you can't tell by everyones responses.

That was awful. I'm glad to hear everyone was ok in the end.

We did last year 06. In the winter there was some ruling that did not force us to have to wear them.

The corner can request a red flag. Control is the only one that can initiate a red flag, red flag, red flag all stations. After having seen this vid 3 year back and corner working now I feel that Control does a pretty good job accessing the situation. Whether the bike is in a bad position (on, in, near) to the race line.

What you cannot see is if there was a waving yellow. There is a second when the cam pans past the apex cone I did not see anything. Bikes are hitting what 60-80mph thru that section. It is hard to react if you have 0 warning.

I agree, Red flag should have been called.
Joel, I remember your posting and getting blasted. I know it is thought to rehash. But there can be a lot to learn from this and there have been a lot of things that has come about because of this unfortunate incident.
