brake-in a new bike on the track? Obviously i've been thinking about getting a new moto and was just wondering if i took something off the showroom floor and went to the track with it, it wouldn't have the proper brake-in according to the manual I know it's a mixxed bag type of question and everyone feels different about it but i kinda feel i'd have to do some easy dirt riding on the thing before i just opened the thing up
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

It's odd but every bike I've seen that's had the S$#T kicked out of it from day 1 runs great and usually makes more power that the same bike that was broken in properly!! Ride it like you stole it I guess. BTW I broke mine in the way Kawasaki said too!! Of course I thought I was gonna kill myself for the 1ST 500 miles, It has a hell of alot more power than my old ZX-10!

Let me see if I understand the question....

You want to know how you should "Brake-in" a "Race Bike"????

Ummmmm...How bout , you break it in during saturday morning practices.....There's a couple heat cycles for you right there.

    Then....You race the fucking thing.

Oh....Don't forget to change the oil after 15 races.

Don't worry about longevity........When it blows up...you can buy a new motor and post pics......and shit.

You should pick up an older model for operational spares, just in case

My bike is broken in on the track every year. Plus top ends 4 times a year. It's ideal to break in a bike at loudon. Lots of variation in rpm and load in a lap.

    Direct from the manual...

    1. Fill the fuel tank...
    2. Perform pre-operation checks..
    3. start and warm up engine, check idle, check operation of controls and the "engine stop"button. Restart the engine and check it's operation within no more than 5 minutes.
    4. Operate the machine in lower gears at moderate throttle openings for 5-8 minutes.
    5. Check how the engine runs when the motorcycle is ridden with the throttle 1/4 to 1/2 open for about an hour.
    6. Restart the machine and operate it for 10-15 more minutes. The machine will now be ready to race.

    CAUTION:
Piston, rings, valves, camshafts, and gears require about 30 minutes of break-in operation at half-throttle or less.

Seems kinda simple by Yamaha specs

    Then why not do it?

What you are doing in break-in is shearing the peaks off from the rings-to-cylinder-wall contact area.

If you don't break it in easy, you will tear those peaks off (instead of shearing them cleanly) and leave deeper valleys than the material can seal.

Ever wonder if the above mentioned break-in proceedure is the cause of your 4 top ends a year?
