    NJMP - T8 & T9

I'm hoping Eric will chime in here since he was riding there last weekend.

the on-board camera is on my friend Bob's bike. he was hitting 28's and 29's this weekend as a AM MW rider.
he downshifts leaned over in T8 for T9 and i've never seen that before.

do you fast guys do this too, or have you tried it?
i can imagine the rear is moving around during the downshift.

Well I think for a moment right before you tip it in there you're not really leaned over far. That's when it's good to set up the gear change for the right-left that's coming up. Help keep the susp settled. Are you not downshifting at all through there?

here's my practice session from Sunday. as you see, i stand it up for a quick second to downshift right before T9

    both

you want that good ill squirt to transition form right to left. Just about pick the front tire off the ground. BRAPPPPPPPPPPPPp

BUT you can not just snap the clutch open. Ease into it, she will like it much better.

Ya I think that's very advanced Gino. I don't think I'm there to do that as far as skill level goes.

looks like you're making it at the same place just he's going faster and doing it while leaned more.

and why are you grabbing 2 downshifts before t5? should only need 1.

and I think I was wrong when I told you the other day I could brake at the 4 board into t1. I was thinking there was only 4 boards not 5. I could probably still brake just after 5 though.

i need to go into 4th gear at the wheelie hill, since i'm at the limiter in 3rd. T5 is a 2nd gear turn, which is why i'm dropping 2 gears.

I have no idea what gear I'm in but I only grab one there and Bob only grabs 1. he was only in third over the hill. do you change your gearing from what you run at NHMS? sounds like you don't. I didn't and it worked but going a tooth or two smaller on the rear I think would work good for me.

T8 NJMP could be compared to T11 Loudon. just one is right and the other is left.

i dont know how often i do it, but i have.
also its been a while since ive been to NJMP but i think you can carry more speed through 5 than you think you can. same with 6. IIRC, i rolled off the gas to settle the front and get it tipped in, then it was back to WFO.

My gearing is the same for both tracks. Try that. I think the lower gearing is actually slowing you down. You will prob be able to stay in certain gears longer and carry more corner speed without losing much rpm considering its such a flowing track.

    Larry,
I've done -1/+4, 0/+2, and now -1/+2. I think this was the best gearing so far.

    Re: NJMP - T8 & T9

Happens all the time (downshifts leaned over).....you need to release bar pressure and have a slipper clutch. It's pretty easy.

Top speeds at NJMP are about 10-12 mph faster than NHMS on a MW bike, and most bikes like to run as 5 speeds there as well. You can use that for gearing calculations.....

    Re: NJMP - T8 & T9

    thanks Eric.

i've noticed i'm getting about 130 MPH (GPS indicated) at NHMS and i topped 140 MPH at NHMS on Sunday.
i've tried several gearing combinations, but still grab 6th gear at the start/finish line. I know the locals say to avoid 6th gear if possible.

would a factory slipper be enough to handle a downshift at a good lean like T8/T9 ?

i would try 0/+4. it may give you that few hundred RPMs so you dont have to grab and extra upshift for 5

140/130 sounds like a 9.25% change....or about 4 teeth total. I go up one on the front and down one on the back for my bike. Just a ballpark to start.....

    Re: NJMP - T8 & T9

Eric, i know i'm not open enough in T12 and could brake later for T1. i'd brake at the cone before the 5 board, and i know i could hold off till at least the 5 board. it's just a comfort thing since i've only been there a few times. i'm sure i could somewhere between 140-145 next time.

id try it, or even 0/+3 just to try to eliminate that extra up/down shift for 5. might be able to carry a gear through 8 without the downshift as well.
but i dont know for sure. ive only been there once and obviously not on a MW. i ran NHMS gearing (-1/0) on the SV and spent most of my day there in 5th and 6th. i dropped to 4th a couple of times but only briefly. if i was gonna race there i may be inclined to run either stock gearing or -1/+1 or 2 just to have a little extra for a draft.
i think i run stock gearing at bigger tracks like VIR and calabogie

I'm sure that's what you saw, but you've gotta be careful looking at speedo's....my best mph last weekend, sitting in the draft of a 1098R superbike, was 149. Best ever was 151 on the laps that can keep it to the stop all the way through the esses and the last corner (for real, not when I'm lying to myself about doing it). That compares to 139mph best top speed at NHMS with a good drive out of T12.

Yeah, when you look at GPS data, it's always depressingly slow compared to any speedo!

Lol I saw 169mph on the speedo of the 1000 but that's easily 12% off.
Is that really the highest speed at nhms Eric? I would assume someone like you would hit 150 at nhms.

That's why I don't have a speedo on the hawk and I never put a GPS on the 1000 lol
