    NSR is ALIVE!!!!

just in case anyone actually cares. my winter bike work is complete, just some carb tunning and set up work left.

well despite not having the carb jets i need yet, i decided to finish throwing the NSR back together with the parts i did have. what can i say i'm impatiant and i'm running out of test and tune time before the first race weekend. all i needed was to figure out how to get it out of the basement..... thanks neighbor!

anyways. once i got it fueled and ready to go, all it took was a 20 foot roll down my convinantly inclined street....two pops of the cluch and it sputtered, coughed than cleared it's throat, cackling into a low but sustainable idle. once up to temp i gave it afew revs....HOLY FUCK!!!.... i forgot how loud it was. well seeing as i live about half a block from the local police station i figured if i was going to do a quick blast down the street and back i'd better be quick about it. as i slowly chuffed along to the bottom of the street i did a quick preflight, brakes, clucth action, and shifting....everything worked great. once turned around i went ahead and let her rip through first and second back up the street. i'm sure the neighbors appreciated the ear splitting racket from my race pipes at about 12,000 RPMs.... after all it's not everyday a 250cc GP bike rockets by your front yard..... just in case though i made haste back to the garage and shut the doors. leaving everyone to wonder what the hell that noise was, and why the whole block now smells like race gas and castor oil

unfourtunatly as much fun as my little test run was it did highlight afew problems. mostly that i need to adjust the idle and figure out where my mid range went??? the bike pulls surprisingly strong from idle to about 6K, than it pretty much shuts off from 6-8k....sounds like it's loading up real bad. once past 8k though it's off to the races. the surge from there to redline is insane....almost lofted the front wheel and launched me up the street like i was fired out of a cannon.....it never did that before. hopefully some rejetting will clear that up. plugs looked alittle rich but i wasn't really running long enough to get a good reading.

6-8K bog indicates that the needle is lean (assuming that you were about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle) I would drop the e-clip down a notch and try it again. If it improves, then go to the next richer needle (bigger number) middle clip.

If you whacked it open and this happened, then a richer main is needed. A rich bike will pull hard down low, and won't rev out.

The bike shouldn't really be able to idle. If it can, lighten the flywheel some.

    NSR is ALIVE!!!!

thanks Paul i was thinking it might be the needle. seems to happen no matter how slowly or quickly i open the throttle. once the bike passes 8K it revs out fine, not perfect, but i know it's not jetted quite right...i'm still waiting for my uber rare KEHIN (sp?) flat slide jets to arrive (not the same as an RS sadly).

like you said though i'm leaning more twords the needle at this point.

and no the bike does not idle well and it never has.... it usualy idles at 3K when warm with no choke....it wont run below that. i just messed up my idle screw settings when i pulled and rebuilt the carbs. that,s all.

Jetting can get really confusing until you have acceptable baselines as it's a system and one circuit effects another. 2 strokes bog when lean making that booowaaaaah type noise. You can't really read plugs til you have a baseline for that either. It takes a LOT of testing to get there. Starting rich and working leaner is the way to go. You may know this stuff, but here's my experience/input

Whacking the trottle open to quickly doesn't give you good information, so just avoid that for now. Work in small throttle increments holding it steady to determine character and adjust relevant settings til you have acceptable performance, then move to the next.

Setting the airscrew to 1.5 turns out should get you started. that only affects the moment you crack the throttle open. If it's smooth, leave it for now. Abrupt, turn it in. rough, turn it out.

Next is the pilot jet 1/8 to 1/3 throttle or so. I don't find this part of the circuit to critical, so again, if it's smooth, leave it. If it bucks, richen it.

The needle is key and influences 1/3 to 3/4 throttle. Rich and the bike will charge hard wanting to leap out from under you, lean the bike will feel gutless or even buck. This is your corner exit action, so it can't be too abrupt, or too soft.

Main jet is determined by WOT rev character, bike temp, plug color, piston color and detonations per minute.

Overwhelming at first to be sure. Once you find the right needle, you won't need to change it and you can use you baselines to judge other changes.

Your neighbors are going to LOVE it!!!!

    NSR is ALIVE!!!!

thanks again Paul. i'll be picking your brain for 2-stroke knowlage all season. the problem is deffinatly in the 1/3 to 3/4 throttle range. so i'll start with the needles, than work from there.

in the mean time i have a plug heat range question. i.e how much of a differance does it make either with either a slighlty hotter or colder plug? i know the plugs i have in there now are 1 number off either hotter or colder (i forget witch). how much of a problem is this?

That can definitely lead to running probs. In fact, certain plugs in the correct range are know to cause probs in the RS. Go with the recommended plug ONLY.

When you think that you finally have it running real good and it's pulling cleanly from bottom to top, call me and I'll come ride it and give you my professional opinion...

Ok, maybe I just wanna ride the NSR! Everyone here knows they were thinking about posting this same scam. I just said it first.
