Opinions on an EX500, and a question or two

I found an EX500 for sale. The guy selling it says he has raced all over, including 4 EX500's and some Ptwins trophies to show for it over the years, and this is the best one he's had. 17" Wheels, 1 track day on Dunlop 208s, Penski shock, progressive springs, case savers, steering damper, woodcraft clip ons. Fresh oil, filters, all the basics like that. Extras are little stuff but includes some levers and another set of pipes. Asking $1500. He said Jeff Wood was involved in the setup/tires, and it's set up perfectly for Loudon (which is where I plan to ride and eventually race it) and he runs one twenties on it.

Sound like a good deal? Good looking bike, guy sounds like he knows his stuff, etc. I'm very tempted to scoop it up.

Wondering if the steering damper would rule it out of the stock PTwins class also?

    Any input appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dan

Buy it. I sold mine, almsot same setup for $1500 a couple years ago. It's a good deal, especially with the Penske shock

Damper is legal, that's a PTWN bike. Sounds like a good deal if it's in good shape, if you're itching to buy now I'd pull the trigger.

Thanks for the input so far. I do not have any up close pics of the bike yet, not sure if I'll be able to get any before I actually go see it. Here's what I have so far.

Is nobody running dampers in this class on this bike? I figured it'd be a nice addition, I just wasn't sure if it would be legal for the class. I'm more than happy to listen to those in the know, so if you guys say it goes, it goes.

They're legal. And 1000% unecessary. Just added weight.

    Reeaaaaally.

To my knowledge two people have done 1:20's on Proddy Twins EX's. Jeff Wood (17.7) and BJ Worsham. I believe BJ said he did ONE lap back in 2003 or 2004 or something on a EX in the high 1:20.8'ish range, or was it a low 1:21?

Re: Opinions on an EX500, and a question or two

I ran a damper on my EX for a while (got one free with a parts bike), and I found it to be useful in a few spots, mostly around turn 7 if I wasn't being gentle with my bar inputs while driving (putting?) up over the crest of the hill. It broke and I learned to live without it just fine, but I wouldn't say it was useless, not to me anyway...

Not sure if it's a coincidence but that happens to be the one area that I'm consistently faster than DB too ;-)

The way I understood it was anything under 1:30, like 1:29 would be 1:20's. I could be wrong, or he could be pulling my chain. I responded to Doc's post about who the seller was but don't know if it would be bad form to come right out and put someone else's name on a public forum. Guy seems to know his stuff, but then again I don't know much so it 's hard for me to say. My buddy who I'm going to go check it out / buy it with used to work in a race orientated shop and race, and he knows is stuff, so the whole deal will be based on his go-over.

So maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing to learn/start with for a rookie like me? I guess if the bike is a deal as it is, damper or no damper can be sorted out down the road, even after a track day or two. The big question now is do I go buy this thing, and the answer seems to be "yes".

i've seen that EX with punisher sticker on it at louden before...no clue on the owner though.

it's a PTwin... you probably don't need a damper..... or fork oil.

oh yeah, and if you ar really looking for a track bike...buy it.

Unless you're running in WERA, then it's required
My EX had one.... it was just turned all the way down. Having it on there certainly won't hurt you or slow you down. The thing might weigh 1/2 a pound if that... not a big deal.

    In racing, 1:20's means 1:20.000 - 1:20.999.

I don't recognize the rider but that punisher sticker looks familiar to me as well.

Well there has never been a situation when I thought, damn, I wish I had a steering damper here. Maybe I lucked out.

Me neither. The bike doesn't need it... I'm just saying my bike had one because it's required for WERA.

No, he's not. I originally thought it seemed a bit high not to have that as well, based on other bikes I've seen for sale in older ads. The reoccurring "buy it" theme in this thread had me thinking I was wrong and it was a deal. What's a second set of wheels gonna set me back? Maybe it's negotiation time?
