    Quick release setups.

I am looking for ideas for quick release/change setups for front brake caliper mounting bolts (non radial mount), front axle pinch bolts, and safety wire that will pass tech. I am looking to speed up wheel changes, and as it stands now, I have to remove my front caliper and pads in order to change wheels. I wanted to know if anyone is using some type of tool-less quick release studs, and safety wire.

I figured that what ever is suggested, I would have to either make myself or adapt to fit my bike.

    Re: Quick release setups.

The typical quick change systems work with quaterturns and springs, if you can't take the fender of and rotate the forks to bypass removing the caliper than the best you can do is replace anything you put a wrench or socket on with a quarterturn. The only time it will save you is how lojnjg it takes to tighten a bolt, the custom build will cost you a ton and leave you with a major safety concern.

Ok, moving on to simplier things, how about the safety wire part? I haven't really looked at anyone else's setup, but I've heard of people using clips or pins that can be reused on things that would otherwise cause you to have to cut the old wire, then wire it up again when done.

I can show you how to do the quick release for the REAR axle. Does your axle have holes in it for a cotterpin?

They don't pass quick release safety wire set-ups at tech anymore. After brian died, they figured it wasn't worth it.

Some people get away with it, but novices don't. You'll get better at wheel changes, but they are a pita.

Well, that settles that then. I did make a tool to hold the rear caliper bracket in place for rear wheel changes, and that helped. It's just that the front is a pain in the ass.

My rear axle does not have cotterpin holes.

+1, CCS allows clips for some things, wire on anything that holds fluid. LRRS doesn't allow clips for the most part.

Quote at daytona - "Wire everything with fluids, we won't let you spill fluid on our track, if you use clips on the wheels we don't care, it's your life if you lose the brakes or wheels."

Practice changing wheels and it gets quick and easy.

    What kinda bike again?

Your set-up may not allow it, but on my SV I just unbolt one side of my front fender so I can remove the front axel & pivot the fork legs out so the wheel clears the caliper... thus eliminating the need to remove the calipers & re-wire them once the wheel's back on.

Thanks Degsy, that was another thing that I was looking for.

It's a Buell M2, one of the older tube framed bikes. It is a total ordeal to remove the front wheel. Even with the pads out and the caliper detached from the fork, you really have to work to find the proper angle to clear the rim and disk. The 330mm disk and 6 piston caliper don't allow for much clearence.

You're not listening. Try the twist fork bottoms method. Many really tight setups pop right out this way.

    Re: Quick release setups.

So you can't remove the fender, remove front axel, lift front wheel & pivot fork leg or something along those lines?

    Re: Quick release setups.

Did we have your bike at the shop? I do remember having a buell in the shop and it was a real pita to remove the front wheel. Between me and Kate we tried about 15 different things before we gave up and removed the pads out of it to get the wheel off. With the huge ass brake disc buell runs and the caliper fitting so close between that and the rim youre going to be doing a lot of swearing and safety wiring

Yeah, that was my bike. The one that had the pad pin stuck. I didn't know that was you. I sent the guy that Degsy linked to a message about getting one of his pins so I don't have that problem again.

Once again, thanks Degsy. I am having one of those pins made. Scott at L7 Motorsports is very cool and eager to help. He is also offering a very quick turnaround.
