    Race Rentals

Not sure if this is the place to ask this, but I wanted some opinions. I was thinking of renting a bike from Penguin for the basic class and Sat. race in October. This would allow me to get my racing license before next season. The money would otherwise all be used over the winter to finish prepping my own bike, and buying some leathers, etc... . Is it worth spending the money now to get the license out of the way, or should I save the money for my gear and do the license next year? Anyone have experience with those rental bikes/leathers?

They're 900ss's, I believe. They look like fun machines. I don't know what lrrs will charge you for a license for the last weekend, but if it's an experiment to see of you wanna go balls out for next year, I'd say spend a little before you spend alot.
Height/weight? Shoe size? We might be able to set you up with some stuff beforehand.

Id say save the cash and get your own stuff for next season. The rental stuff is ok to get your license but at the end of the weekend you still have no gear.

As a matter of principle I prefer to avoid renting whenever I can for the reason mentioned above... sure, you get to use whatever it is you're renting while you're renting it, but at the end you gotta give it back & you're left with nothin. Save your pennies & budget your money properly and you'll end up spending less money in the long run.

But with that said, do what you wanna do, it won't matter all that much. Not gonna make much of a difference one way or the other in the grand scheme of things. Either way, you're gonna spend a metric shit ton... Welcome to racing

I agree, wait til spring. there is a sliding scale for licenses, this late in year you will pay less but for 1 race? and as far as the current Penguin bikes, Ducati Monster 696 - Jeff Wood entered 2 races last week end on one and smoked the field. - so don't blame the bike! Have fun

They're renting 900SS and 696 Monsters, $250 a day, plus insurance... save your cash.

Okay, so the bike might be a tad pricey on top of a one weekend license. Butplenty of peeps got gear to borrow.

i have a 2001 EX500 for 500 and you won't have to rent a bike. Then sell it next year.

    Good point.

However he CAN take the school now, then apply for a 2011 license later. Doesn't have to get a 2010 license right away.

    Re: Race Rentals

Thanks guys for all the info and advice. I was under the impression the racing license was good forever? I would never waste my money for a license that is good for 1 race. I thought about it all day at work, and even though it would be good to get the basic class out of the way, it's definitely not worth it when I can use that money for my bodywork and paint. I'd rather use my own bike anyway. I guess I'll just come up to watch the races in Oct. Maybe I'll bump into some of you in the infield.

You need to renew every year, and do at least 1 race every year or two to keep it valid.

Fwiw you can do penguin on your own scoot, pretty much as is, and just run the rr and get your license next year. If you were so inclined to get a taste for it this fall.

What kind of retard goes to penguin on the last race weekend, with intentions of waiting till next season to start racing?

I have everything except a leather suit. Do people generally ride around the streets wearing full race gear? Now I don't know what criteria you would judge someone to be "ready to go race", but all I can say is that just because someone doesn't do track days doesn't mean they won't become faster than you. What is this obsession with trying to scare someone out of racing based on absolutely no knowledge of how good a rider is except that they haven't done a track day? I'll guarantee you that there have been guys who have done 20 or 30 track days, who have tried so hard to be fast, but they just will never be as good as I'll be because they don't have what it takes. They don't have the innate ability or the intelligence to learn fast. Or maybe it doesn't even matter. My goal here isn't to win trophies my first season, I just want track time on the weekends to work on getting faster. As I've already said, 2012 will be the year where I'm competing. If you think my lap times suck at the end of next year, you can tell me I should have done some track days first.

Yes. One piece leathers, boots, helmet, gloves, kidney belt and back protector.

And that's for a rip on my GS500E.

And people try to direct newcomers to track days first because there is more to being 'fast' than knowing your bike. Having practice riding in traffic, safe passing etc on a track is not something you can practice on the street, and isn't something you should be learning your first lap into your first race. : )

    Re: Race Rentals

brian, how would you feel if you've done 20-30 track days at Loudon & feel confident enough to start racing. then some hot shot who THINKS they are ready (because he/she is a fast street rider), and takes you out on the 1st lap? not to sound like a prick, but i'd be quite furious if my season and/or bike was done because some over cocky rider was out there and didnt belong yet.

no one knows your skills/predictability yet but you. just keep in mind that the 20-30 other riders that will grid up next to you next season will be trusting your judgement.
