I have the leathers, stands, etc...I've been slowly building up the gear over the last couple years to get ready for a track day. Send me some pics, I might be interested.

What do you guys think of a track ready 2001 R6? The guy wants $1400, but I think I can get it for $1k. The plastics are in rough shape, but supposedly it runs good, Some basic mods like woodcraft bar-ends and rear sets, 520 kit, NRC covers. No title, no mileage.

seems cheap to me. even if it crapped itself first day you rode it, you could probably get 75% of your money back parting it. so i would say a safe bet. thats how i looked at it when i bought mine.

It doesn't list anything, so I'm guessing it's all stock.

Sounds like a fun "track" toy, I don't know about "race" toy. You may be okay with that giddy up in Novice, but I doubt it'll fly beyond that. As for you "not" liking racing. Fat chance. I've never heard of anyone that's "tried" it and not liked it. If you have all the gear... save your money and find an 06+ GSXR or R6 and go from there. As a matter a fact... call Ryan Hobbs at www.1023motors.com He has an 06 GSXR for sale and I'm sure will give you a fair price. I just saw it this weekend.

Whatever you buy, make sure you bitch to the seller & any of their friends for more parts that weren't included in the sale. Then take off the rearsets and try to sell them for the new retail price.

    Re: Good race/track bike

Big difference between racing a 2001 YZF-R6 or a 2001 CBR 600 F4i? I'm leaning towards the fact that the F4 is fuel injected, but realize they are both older and might be fairly limited with what they can do on the track. Is one model a better race bike than the other?

Can't speak to the 2 models specifically, but I can speak to the F4i in question. The thing is badass. It has an ohlins shock, front internals, ti exhaust, scotts damper & spares for everything (including wheels). Good tires too. I spend some time last weekend wrenching on it, and saw the collection of parts in 6's basement. If I were to buy a MW right now that thing would be long gone. Hell, I want it and I'm not even looking to buy a MW

Not sure about the R6 but put my vote in for the F4i. It's going to be down on power when compared to the newer bikes but you can more than make up for it with cornerspeed. A great handler with the right suspension setup.

I was doing very well in AM on one with light mods and suspension and would likely be continuing that trend this year but a house is getting in the way at the moment.

    Re: Good race/track bike

With the way the new gas is these days I would try to go with EFI. They have changed gasoline in recent years and with those changes came many problems for people who have toys that are not used year round and are stored in between seasons. The new gas leaves more deposits and gels up if not stored properly. There are ways around this, such as draining the gas along running the right stabilizer through it to handle any fuel that doesn't drain. That being said you will be fine with a carbed bike but fuel injection won't require you to be so particular about storing it. With EFI you can just run stabilizer through it and leave the gas in it. The pressure in the fuel system will take care of the rest. I am a snowmobiler and it seems that no matter what I do to stabilize the fuel and drain it...I still have to open up the carbs the following year cause its not running right when I fire it up.

You want a good learning tool and dirt cheap race bike? Or a faster fun track day bike? That'll help answer your question.

Thanks for all the input. I chose the bike that would be fast and fun at a track day. I figure I'm not going to be competing any time in the next year or two if I decide to go that route, and I can resell this bike as a street bike for more money than an ex500 or an R6 with no title.
