A bunch of the people on ADVRider.com have a lot of experience with international shipping, customs, and DIY on a budget. Might be another good source of info. Check out the Racing and Trip Planning sections.

Re: How can you race TT Isle of Mann?

sounds like a blast Sav. there was talk of them doing a TT in Nova scotia that i was dead set on doing on the SV. unfortunately it didnt happen and any dream of me racing at IOM is just that...a dream.
i think you should move there for a year and do the IRRC. they race all over the IOM course, that way you can learn it in sections. learning 30+ mile of racetrack would be a challenge even for me (i can usually learn a track in a couple laps).
if you go, and i have the ability to go with you, then count me in. id be happy to do tire changes and put zip ties on things.

EDIT: to be fair, most of the people that die there are NOT racers. when the road is open to the public between races or whatever, there is no speed limit and people think that they are ken block or joey dunlop and end up in a hedge...or someones kitchen.

Among others over on the wera site, Shaun Harris (iomTT) might be someone to get in touch with. His posts can be hard to follow sometimes but he has loads of TT experience and, like many others, seems enthusiastic to share and get new people involved. He lives in New Zealand but seems to have a number of contacts on the isle. It might also be worth taking a look at "buying a ride" or renting a bike for your time there instead of trying to get your bike over there and back with all the hassles that can entail.

Also talk to Accident Insurance | RiderSurance as the last thing you want is to be out of country and no coverage.

All I can add is that the EX650R is, supposedly, a more popular bike in the mini twins category out there.

I happen to know a guy who has one.

Man that would be an awesome experience. I've always watched the videos and said I would love to race the IOM if the opportunity presented itself. Having a family now pretty much means it's out of the question for me, but I really hope you can pull it off. I'll definitely be waiting anxiously for the race reports.

It's ridiculously expensive from what I see. The really good news is that Greece is right there

More power to you man. It'd be awesome to see you do it.

If a little more money isn't an issue, get a good camera man and start documenting the shit out of your process to produce into a documentary. It might be a way to recoup some funds as there isn't that many people from the U.S. That are able to get over there to race.

Another idea would be to get on with a university or something for an E-bike submission. Speeds are slower and there's a lot more chances to get into the grids.

CHMoto campaigned their Chinese EX650R clone this year. Maybe they'd be up for a lil sponsorship action for racing one in the US too?

I have a couple friends who have gone to the manx the last 3 years. Ten are going in 2015, unfortunately I won't be going, but they say its a great time. They rent a house and stop in Ireland on the way, or way back.

One of them bought Blythe's TZ250 this year as someone said above that he raced an EX650 there. Second hand word from those who have gone to watch the manx said the EX650 is very popular there due to its bottom end design, especially for those that find a lot of time airborne. Supposedly the crank holds up very well to the punishment of the rear wheel getting airborne and then landing.

I've heard that as well from some multi year manx spectators.

Re: How can you race TT Isle of Mann?

Outline of class structure. I didn't bother with the Senior or Zero classes.

    Classes
    (References: http://www.iomtt.com/~/media/Files/2...REGS_2014.ashx
    http://www.fim-live.com/fileadmin/al...510004eng1.pdf
    )
All bikes, except Lightweight, must be current production models.
    Superbike
    Over 750 to 1000 cc4 stroke, 3 and 4 cylinder
    Over 850 to 1200 cc4 stroke, 2 cylinder
Minimum weight165 kg (empty tank, worn tires, minimum allowed weight of the bike)
All engines must function on normal unleaded fuel, with a maximum lead content of 0.005 g/l and a maximum MON of 90.
Tons of very specific modification allowed.

    Supersport
    Over 400 up to 600 cc4 stroke, 4 cylinder
    Over 500 up to 675 cc4 stroke, 3 cylinder
    Over 600 up to 750 cc4 stroke, 2 cylinder
Minimum weight161 kg(empty tank, worn tires, minimum allowed weight of the bike)
All engines must function on normal unleaded fuel, with a maximum lead content of 0.005 g/l and a maximum MON of 90.
Tons of very specific modification allowed.

    Superstock
    Over 750 to 1000 cc4 stroke, 3 and 4 cylinder
    Over 850 to 1200 cc4 stroke, 2 cylinder
Minimum weight165 kg, but additional motorcycle specific weights provided.
Much less modification allowed, but standard stuff is OK (suspension, brakes, etc.)

    Lightweight
4 stroke, twin cylinder motorcycle originally sold for road use with a water cooled engine of up to 650cc 2006 or later may be used.
    No slicks.
Starter / Kill switch on handlebars.
Power commander OK, but original ECU must remain.
Similar modifications to Supersptock, however replacing front suspension is allowed.

So they went up a year. Looks like the LW twin class the bike has to be 9 years old or newer. So I will have to buy/build something.

Yes that's what I imagine. Regardless my current bike is 2000 so it doesn't qualify as is.
