I've personally heard good things from Jim about my slow street Hawk. In that it could ride circles around 600-750-1000's w/out thinking about it. I like Jim.

Just enter The 1000 in any HW Race, Its novice it nobody cares .Its only a problem if you win. once you get out of Novice there will be more races for you to run with your 1K.

jk... If you really want to race an ex500 definitely the lowest cost way to get into it. Another option would be to sell the 1k, buy a cheap SV street bike and use the leftover funds to get into racing. Even if you want to run bigger bikes, just buy someones takeoffs or something for tires, it'll save you hundreds. Just don't crash, thats the most expensive part of racing.

I actually spoke to him at length about the bike. It is a rather odd build but for the sum of the parts I think $1500 is worth it. Even if the motor is stock and not a 700. You could sell all the street parts and be into that bike for maybe $1000. I'd buy it if I hadn't just bought a 450x.

When I get "B" Hawk track ready it will come with spares (front and rear rim) and I'll want to get $1500 (but mine will be running)

If you buy it, Matt Stone could replace the head gasket at a good price.

Nothing wrong with that EX500 though!

Just do it Get the track time They are more concerned with The number of races you have competed in and your laptimes as opposed to your index.

I went form a 929 (Big bike for me)with track days to the Hawk (small bike)for racing. I loved and am still loving it. I am still more comfortable on the small bike going faster in the corners than a 600 going slower in the corners.

The Hawk has less power, is smaller and a little more flickable from my experience on an SV.


You might not need many races to advance to different levels if you meet the min requirements. It all depends on how aggressive you want to move up. For some 1 race a week is good enough. That was my plan. FOR ME.. The experience of watching and asking question added more to my learning process than banging out races. For others trying to get as many races in a day or weekend may be beneficial to their learning.

Best bet is to come up with a plan. It seem like you are on the right path in asking question. Whatever you choose don't get frustrated with you decision. It is all about the FUN factor + a little adrenalin.

Being down 10hp is a ton when the primary bike in the class has 50hp total. I still say the GS500 out handles and out brakes the EX500, but that HP difference is a big hole to dig out of.
