    Just About Ready

So I dove into the new racebike for a short while today. Replaced a lot of zip ties with actual bolts and put in the new battery. Also gave her a new look with some mint Rustoleum. It's amazing how it can run (and decent at that) on at least 2 year old gas. She runs well but it sounds like the cam chain needs some tension or something. I'll get to checking it soon enough.

Also ripped apart the gas cap so I could actually use it. Someone decided a key wasn't the way they wanted to go and tried using a large screwdriver or something similar to permanantly lock the mechanism. After removing all the tumblers, it works with a small screwdriver good enough for my liking.

Also tossed some new oil and a filter in her.

And this is how she sits right now:

Next up? Trying to convince Darryl to send me the cap for the coolant reservior and then ordering up some race tiyah's.

Not to keep buttin in... but the noise you are hearing was checked out by the "experts" at the track and told to be ok... I believe it was Dana Temple who looked it over when I sold it to Nancy... I forget what he exactly said it was... but I guess it's comon on the EX... look him up when you're there... sure he can fill you in better...

The starter clutch sounded a bit funky, so I'm thinking it may be that. I'd rather fully investigate the sound than just dismiss it as "ok". I've taken the word of "experts" before and gotten bitten in the ass!

Just put some earplugs in... you'll never flog the thing properly if you can hear the nasty noises its making!

I dunno, I'd have to hear it. The EX motor doesn't make pretty sounds though... A new timing chain tensioner would be a dumb investment...

It sounds like it's out of adjustment, but the more I listen, the more I suspect the funky starter clutch. It skips a bit and makes some hideous noises when starting the bike.

I wouldn't replace the tensioner, I have two other Kawasaki's with the same one and know they very rarely go.

Looks like I may take her for her shakedown run on the BMW trackday

Whoops, I meant to say "wouldn't be a dumb investment" I have heard of the old style ones failing. Vaguely remember something about new ones failing. It'd be worth taking it out to make sure it functions properly.

Ah, ok. They are very simple devices and I don't imagine they would fail easily, but I'll check it anyways. Thanks!

Would anyone happen to have a spare back protector? I need to use one for the next race weekend/Penguin since my Impact Armor won't be ready. If not I'll order one of those cheap Teknik and cut it down to Iglu size.

Mint. If I can find another in the meantime, I'll let you know. I need one for the Friday Penguin course as well.

There will be liquid repercussions for this transaction.

I'm sure Jay can get his up there, but if for some reason he can't get his to you, I can see about getting mine up there somehow. I won't be up there till Saturday morning.

were those zip ties holding bodywork on? if so you may want reconsider...in a crash the zip ties will break...if you have bolts in the body work will break...

Use skinny & cheap zipties on the bodywork... better to have a ziptie break than race glass.

Yeah, problem with how it was ziptied though...they weren't staying on....even while not being ridden....or moving....or running....or touched...inside a sealed garage.....

I'll be putting some "Icey Hot Stunnah" new holes in it soon and then she'll be ziptied the correct way (if there is one).

Plus, it makes for dramatic crashing when the bodywork goes flying everywhere! Ahhh, the good old days.
