    safety wire?

I drilled my drain plug for safety wire today. I used, get this...a hand drill. I'm not talking about a cordless drill, I mean one of those wood-and-gear mechanisms you saw in your grandfather's basement. It worked wonderfully. Very strange.

It's not strange at all!! Most people don't realize that a very low speed allows the drill bit to actually drill the metal rather than spin on it

    safety wire?

Here's a question, is there a problem with wiring the drain plug / oil filter to the exhaust header? It runs right there next to both of them and would make an easy place to do a loop over. It just seems like one of those things that *should* be a bad idea, but I can't think of a good reason why it is.

The header itself or a header bolt? I personally don't think it would be a good idea to tie it to the header

I just changed the oil in my R1 and did the prep work at the same time. The oil filter i wired to a nearby radiator hose clamp just like the one i put around the filter and the oil drain bolt i wired to the collar on the crankcase that surrounds the drain bolt (drilled a small hole in it). The oil fill cap (put the one off my R7 on it because i didn't want to drill the R1 one) i wired down to one of the clutch bracket bolts. I'd go take some pictures but i'm kinda tired and lazy Maybe tomorrow

Is there any reason why you cant wire the drain plug and oil filter to each other?

Depends how close it is and if anything is in the way
Keep in mind when you wire (probably getting a little annal with this but.. ), the reason for the wire is to prevent the bolt from even coming lose, not to prevent it from falling out. Even the oil filter posted in the picture above is not pulling in a way to stop that filter from losening a small amount. That being said, if you can attatch your drain plug to your filter at points where the wire will "pull" the filter tight and "pull" the drain bolt tight all at the same time and have no slack in it, it would be fine

The way I did that filter is not ideal because I was too lazy to drill the bolt on the clamp, so it "could" loosen allowing the filter to loosen. Drill the bolt.

thanks man, i think i'm just gonna do all the bike prep once i get down to VA.... i'm not gonna have any time to do it this week w/ work

As for the low speed drill thing, i agree... at first i used a plug-in high-speed drill, but that was too fast, heavy & unstable at low speeds... so i switched to my electric drill that's smoother & slower... just barely squeezed the trigger. worked like cake w/ those bits i got

Hey Paul..you drinkin when you do this? Cuz 15 bits is quite a large number! haahaaaaa!!! Just fokin wit ya bro!

For real though..if you know someone with a drill press..USE IT!!!
Gordon helped me with mine, and it was 10000000000 times easier than when I did it without a drill press!
