    Setting up a track bike

    Hey all,

I'm thinking about setting up one of my bikes for track only use. It's a 2005 Honda CBR1000rr. I'm already looking at a Hotbodies fairing set and the bike currently has a Power Commander 3 and full Yoshi exhaust. Aside from the obvious (good brakes, tires, chain, sprocket, etc.) is there anything else I should consider when setting it up?

I know the 1000 may be a little big and the 05 is 430lbs. Ideally I'd like a 600, but I'm not having any luck moving the CBR. Should I just wait till spring? Any feedback would is appreciated.

    Trackdays or racing or both?

For trackdays it's fine, racing it is tough...

I've got a good friend who races an 06, but he's got full suspension too, but he's running 1:16 laptimes...

Rear shock will help you the most on that bike, find a used penske for short money. I've raced an '05 1000rr for a while now. PM if you have questions.

Sell it in the spring, buy a cheap dedicated track bike that's already built up. Save thousands, high five me for this little gem of wisdom.

Usually true but I've got 90% of what he needs sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

Re: Setting up a track bike

In my personal experience, seeing how easy it is to go down, and how expensive even a small low side is...

get a track bike for cheap

Unless you dont like having money, then by all means, build up a cbr1000 for loudon

^Smart plan here. It may be tough to just sit on it all winter and wait, but you'll have more luck selling it in the spring when motorcycles are on people's minds. Depending on your desires, your experience level, etc, there is merit to both riding the bigger bike you're comfortable on, and to selling it off and getting something smaller to use as a real learning tool you can have fun on.

That said, to answer your question: suspension, tires, and basic maintenance(like the aforementioned chain/sprockets, brakes, etc) are really all you need to worry about for a trackday bike. A clean and well maintained bike that has some things helping it stay planted to the pavement should serve you well. Some crash protection doesn't hurt either, frame sliders, rearsets, race style clip ons, etc.

Your asking price is fair but that ad needs some work, IMO.

Might be scaring buyers a little with how the information reads.

^^I suggest heroin. Cheaper, and probably safer.

"Racing addiction makes heroin seem like a vague desire for something salty"

I forget who said it, but it's pretty accurate.

Re: Setting up a track bike

My everyday bike is an 06 GSX-R 750. I'm not overly concerned about the 1000 at this point. It just hangs out in my garage and get started every few days with a random quick ride.
