    Shock question

I picked up an ELKA 3 way for my 07 G1K to finally replace the OEM unit for this year, but I noticed it's set up about 1/2" longer eye to eye than my stock shock. I'm assuming the previous owner did this to adjust for a more forward geometry. Should I return the shock to OEM height or run it longer as it sits? I've already dropped the forks flush with the top of the triple to make up for the taller rear Dunlops fwiw.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    street or track?
street: probably get it closer to stock otherwise it may wear on you being so leaned over the bars
track:leave it and see how you like it

    Re: Shock question

1/2 inch at the shock is going to add up to a lot more at the wheel. Maybe your bike likes that set up but that's a big change all at once. I'd ask around to people with your bike and set up.

At the very least, measure your ride height before and after so you know were you were and how much it changed.

    Re: Shock question

I have a very similar issue. My bike is a 1998 gsxr 600 track day bike. I just got a replacement Penske. It has a ride height adjustment. By my measure the bike will sit 2cm higher with it as it sits compared to stock. I don't know if I should praise the added height or bring it back to a more stock geometry. I am also running a 190 tire and I've dropped the forks about 5 mil into the triple to compensate for the bigger tire as advised when I bought the bike.

5 mil is about a tenth of a millimeter.

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

    Re: Shock question

Yeah, I agree...slap it on, ride it, and go from there.

Aside from the ergonomical aspect, a longer shock will raise the center of gravity, and decrease trail, making the bike turn a bit easier. If you don't like how it feels, shorten it up and go from there.

My Elka (I ride an SV) is substantially longer than the stocker and I like it. You never know until you try though.

    Re: Shock question

Thanks for the input! From what I've found the sweet spot is between 323-327mm eye to eye. I've set it at 325, so well see how that feels in April!

    Wirelessly posted (HTC EVO "DROID" : Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.5; en-us; Sprint APA9292KT Build/GRJ90) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

You might have to put the forks back into their stock position, but chances are whoever had that on their bike before you has done the testing and come up with that set up. Just run it. If it feels too twitchy or falls into the turn too fast then change it a little.

    Re: Shock question

If I was you I would contact Elka and run the part numbers off the shock..cause I know that the 06 07 GSXR 600/750 was diff in length and a few other things than any other gsxr shocks.....they are a good shock and really big on the west coast just not here as much..just make sure its the right shock for a 07 08 1000..
