    Slipper clutches

Someone educate me. Are they all relatively the same? Is one brand better than another?

STM is widely recognized being top of the line, that's what I have in my tard.

Hinson and Rekluse are also very popular

I had one (FBF reboxed a STM) and it did not help with lap times. Just blip the throttle. Think triple clamps or increase the tire budget. Money better spent that way.

Not really using it for lap times, more for engine preservation. And I already have triples, and my tires lasted me quite well. 1 front and 2 rears for the entire season.

I like Surflex's personally, little be different mechanical setup that most.

...gotta find a newer transmission for the catastrophe so I can put a slipper in, or find someone to machine me a custom spacer/retainer...

Cush drive rear hubs help too, if you can get one for your machine.

Yoyodyne? I don't really know anything about their general quality, but I've had it recommended to me for my bike (obviously SuMos are different animals).

I've got an STM, saves the engine, especially with misshifts, keeps the rear settled, and you end up using the brakes to control braking instead of engine so you can refine your speed a little better, much smoother entrances and smoother transitions to the throttle, no clutch or blipping for downshifts.

    Re: Slipper clutches

I have a Alder slipper. They are the brand that come spec on KTM's and it works very well. I love my RMZ with the slipper compared to without. I rode it 07 and 08 without it and 09 with. Much better.

Richie I may be selling/parting out my RMZ so maybe hold off for a few yea? It's only October!

    Re: Slipper clutches

My '07 zx6r came with a slipper from the factory. I didn't really respect or recognize what it did for me until I started riding the '00 sv650 up at Loudon which didn't have one. Yes you can blip the throttle, yes you can feather the clutch but it's so much easier to not think about it if I'm already a little late in my sequence. No it's not something you need but it is damn nice to have.
I got my Yoyodyne from Souhegan Valley Motorsports.

Nope... leaned over and trailbraking, just stomp on the pedal a couple times. I use the clutch for the launch and that's it.

    Dunno. It worked.
And I cant really tell a major difference between my KTM which has a slipper and the RMZ which doesnt.

I've never ridden one of those 'factory slippers', that actually felt like a slipper.

    Re: Slipper clutches

I occasionally clutch less downshifted the KTM and Suzuki, but usually I was already below where I should have been rev wise and looking to roll on so it'd just snick right in like it was an automatic. I haven't tried any real aggressive clutch less downshifts on the KTM yet...

+1 The stock one on my r6 definitely does SOMETHING... quite a bit actually as I found out when i rode a 600 without one... but it is nowhere near as effective as the STM on my tard... that thing is buttery smooth.

The r6 I still clutch all my downshifts and need to let the clutch out somewhat smooth, especially in places like T11 where the bike is leaned over pretty good.
