How do I start in racing?

    Thanks Boss,
I didn't time myself at the trackday but it was the BMW day and I was in the yellow group by the end of the day.

Just to give an idea, Maybe Ken C has an Idea of how fast that group was running.

Errr. No. More like 40-45 for your 'average' trackday rider on a Hawk. Most Novice Hawk racers are in the 26-36 range for Racetimes.

I believe my wife was running about 1:50 in the RED group at the BMW date.

That was about mid pack. Red was probably in the 1:45 to 2 minute range.

My guess is that Yellow at the BMW dates is in the 1:40 to 55 range.

Blue is probably in the 1:30 to 40 range

At our regular events, it's more like:

    1:20 to 1:30 is Blue

    1:30 to 1:40 is Yellow

    1:40 to 1:55 is RED

These are just estimates since NO TIMING IS ALLOWED!

at a trackday sure... but step it up to racing & after a few races i'm sure you'd be under 40's in no time, don't ya think?

The way you worded it Bored at Work Boy makes it sound as thou you are talking about Trackdays on a Hawk and the times you would be running (30-35 as you said). To which I said 'nay'.

Seeing as how you were apparently refering to your first weekend of RACING and how a average trackday rider could do 30-35... isn't that exactly what I said in my post. Numbnutz.

Thanks for that Tony. I really had no clue as to what the times were I was just having a blast and didn't care, that is until I started to get the racing bug.
I will hopefully be making another of your trackdays this year. Great times man! Great times!

Hey I thought I was "bored at work boy"?

I was running my Hawk, First trackday and I certainly wasn't "killin it"
Just trying to learn the line and be smooth, the quickness will come.

I did 1:19's on the older config. that was about 1.5-2.0 seconda slower. I had both a 700 and a 750 NT 650. I could beat the Duc ss750's of the day that made 85 hp on my 75ish Hawk. I bet I could do a 1:17 on that bike today.

You were a Novice at the time? Congrats.

Since 1999 the fastest a Hawk has gone around Loudon is 1:19.0 by Tom Barry in 2004. He did it twice.

Personally I think/know they are capable of more. If a SS SV can do mid 18's, then a SB Hawk can to. I'm pretty positive Jeff can do a 15 on my bike. Gonna let him try later in the year.

    I was Expert, and the years were '94 & '95. A 1:19 in 1999 is like a 1:20-1:21 now

How do I start in racing?

    Resurrecting this thread.

So I am looking at $220 for the Penguin school. Plus $110 plus entry fees for as many races as I want...

Looking at a 3 day weekend of about $500. With a prepped bike and minimal expenses.

    Does that sound right?

The next weekend will just be entry fees and paddock fees right?

What is a 3 day trip to VIR gonna cost? With the race school down there.

Where do I get White (not yellow) number plates? and numbers. When do you get your number and can you choose it? (three digit right?)

I need to go read the rule book.
