    Stock suspension limits (per experience)

If you can afford good suspension, get it... there's a reason everyone says this is their favorite and most important mod to their bike. I'm just curious as to what people were running on stock suspension & rider weight.

I'm all for Novices and even slower AM's just going with the "run whatcha brung" mentality. I did it and I was fine for the most part... it just moved around a bunch under me. I'm not gunna say there weren't a couple crashes that may not have happened had I had better suspension though. Any novice racer will be fine on stock, once you start working down your times the problems will become more apparent and you can fix it then.

    T10 was a killer haha

    Does PTwins count?

    1:29s/EX500/145 pounds
(Note, very early in my riding career, so that played a little to do with times, but I upgrading due to bottoming out in 9, and a couple other places now and again)

Chris (teach) Mcneil was 15's on stock ZX6 suspension about 175lbs
Think Eric Sampson was 16's or 17s on stock 600RR about 200lbs

Re: Stock suspension limits (per experience)

I guess I'm a snob. I never really rode on stock suspension. OK, well, my first ptwins bucket was stock, I blew it up before I was much faster than 1:29.

I have done some laps on a stock new gen R6 that I thought was good enough to race competitively in the expert field for a light rider.

I really like riding Jamie's RR which is very far from stock. I don't llike a bike to transition a lot of weight in the corners, so stock won't usually cut it.

guess i'm in the same boat as paul. never really rode stock suspension aroun the track with the exception of my first time on the track ever, and that was on my r6.

From my research, the SMRs have higher spring rates stock, front and rear, slightly longer travel than the enduro versions, and increased trail up front by using non leading axle fork lugs compared to the dirt versions.

Just outta curiosity, where did you get that information?????

Every set I know of has a leading axle from the factory.

My KTM had stock WP forks and shock. Nothing spectacular about them. They are definitely DIRT bike forks.

I am picking up a yzf450 with no intentions of being competitive on it... probably not racing it. The rider has put stiffer front and rear springs in the bike (how much stiffer you ask? no idea what the rates are).

I'm more than happy to run it stock, are there any gross shortcomings on the '06 YZF's that you could warn me about?

A couple different KTM forums had threads discussing what was required to setup an SMR/SMC for dirt duty, which prompted a discussion of the differences between them and the dirt targeted Katooms. I've been doing a mad scramble to read up on them, really doesn't seem to be that much info out there so I've had to resort to gleaning info from forums, as dubious as that can be.

Doing a lil quick google image searching, I can see the 690 SMC has non-leading axle forks, looks like the SMRs do run leading axle fronts.

See what I get for reading forums!

While we're vetting forum suggestions, the other tidbit I came across was the use of clamps from the 125/250 in place of the 450/520/560 clamp set to reduce offset on the cheap?

on the cheap, eh? I've seen a guy with the "leading axle", behind the fork... must have swapped forks in the triples and spun em around... it looked super weird, and I was looking around for his "gyro" off of his GT performer.

I've seen guys do that on minis... never a full sized bike... A couple guys doing 'Mono-GP' builds run their clamps backwards.

While we're discussing Katooms and stock suspensions, I assume a stock SMR setup will work with a 130lb sack of wet noodles piloting it at a novice pace?
