    SV gearing for NHIS

I'm starting to put my 650 back together and I'm just wondering what others run at NH. I'm strictly a track day guy and average mid 20's running 15/44.

    I've got rears in 43, 44, 45, and a friggin huge 46.

I run 14/44 and 15/47 which are essentially the same.

Put the 46 on. Use the 43/44 for VIR, maybe even calabogie. 45 for njmp.

15/45 (stock) works well. I'm trying 15/46 to start off 2011.

Charlie, with the 46, you're probably gonna want to downshift for 6 and grab an upshift at the bleachers or the t7-t8 flip.

The latter would be my approach to it. It works okay

The rest of your shift points should be pretty straight forward but lemme know if you wanna hear the rest of mine.

That's due to the gearing for my fat a$$, not my bike.

I'd like to hear them. I was still playing with shift points the last time I was on the track....

    With 15/46:

Top out 5th down the front straight.
    1 downshift approaching turn 1 (4th)
    1 downshift approaching turn 3 (3rd)
1 upshift approaching the exit of turn 4 (4th)
1 downshift approaching the bowl (3rd)
1 upshift approaching the turn 6 grandstands (4th)
    1 downshift approaching turn 11 (3rd)
2 upshifts on the front straight (5th)

I've tried to loose the T6 down shift. IT takes a lot to carry that much speed in. I have not gotten it yet. Should be good for a .5-1 seconds if I can hit it right. I've out a number of times with different lines and a whole lot of blown apexes and exits. Some day I hope to nail it.

    Re: SV gearing for NHIS

I lied. The gearing I used last year is 15/46. That's probably about as tall as you would want to go.

Edited my previous posts slightly to avoid confusion.

I'm slightly shorter gearing than Pete, but you need to carry a lot of corner speed to use 4th in t1, t2 and t6.
Pete also uses gp shift so he can upshift while leaned over in t7, I can't so I have to carry the speed through the bowl

Have you thought about going up 1 tooth in the rear? Maybe even 2? Or are you maxed out on the front straight?

    The Hawk's a 5 speed I believe.

And considering that it's Gino we're talkin about, he's gotta have that thing dialed in about as good as it could ever get

Back before I went GP shift, I experimented a little, going back & forth between downshifting & not downshifting for T6.
If I didn't, I was bogging coming out of the bowl.
If I did, I was running out of revs between the grandstands and the flip for T8

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

But because the T7/T8 area is such an infrequent passing zone (especially compared to T6), I chose to downshift into T6, get a better drive out, run out of revs and grab the next gear when flipping for T8.

Since you've got the gearing, experiment a little with both the 45 and the 46.

I'm not overly concerned with the front straight but it is close to the limiter. It is the other 90% that I'm really focused on.

With the 16-44 (Top speed on paper 127.5 mph)I'm just getting to the rev limiter (4th gear) on a perfect drive into T3, T6 and T11. Those are some key spots for me for making some key moves. If I go up 1 in the rear (top Speed 16-45 = 124.6 mph) I'll be defeating the purpose of trying to reduce a shift. I'll now need and up shift before these areas and then might need maybe 2 downshifts. I feel it would be a waste of effort for 100' or so. I'd rather rely on the constant drive to the braking zones. It is a fine line as Pete mentioned.

When I squished the 165 tire on the 4.5" rim I found the limiter sooner than on the 5" rim. Yea, minor differences in tires on how they are mounted makes a difference.

With the stock motor the rev limiter was pretty close with the 16-46(on paper 121.9mph) gearing.

You've got me thinking. On paper a 17-47(On paper 126.6mph) is only .8 slower at the top end. It might be the little that I need. I could also see a potential for less swing arm slider wear.

Interesting reading how you guys shift on the sv.... on a 600 I carry 3rd all the way from the top of the hill in T4 to T11.

And I short shift 5th towards the end of the straight, and go down 2 into T1.

It's the only way to make a lightweight bike go. The sv rev's out at about 10 grand not 200,000 rpm like a 600.

Gino- its interesting that you say the rim changed how fast you hit the limiter.
Sv is 4.5 rim with 165, but if you're used to running it on a 5 the tire would be flatter on the 5 than the 4:5 thus making it taller and essentially changing final gear ratio. You probably found the limiter quicker because either you were going faster or at least accelerating faster because of the profile change.
The whole sprocket dance you speak of makes sense too since 1 tooth is about 2-3 in the rear and then you counteract that with a 1 tooth change in the rear makes it more like 1.5. Combine that with some rim/tire combs and now you're talking fine tuning

    Re: SV gearing for NHIS

Go away for a few days and I get all kinds of info.

My rear rim/tire are not stock. A bit larger than stock making gearing slightly taller. I never thought of that but makes sense. I have about 2 more weeks to work on it then I'm gone for vacation. I doubt I'll get it all done.
