OK, so I'm starting to get the return to racing bug, and I'm also really bored, so I'm starting to do some research.
Basically, I know nothing about racing the SV. What do I need to know when I'm looking for one? 1st gen vs 2nd gen? I want to be able to run SS, so I know what I need to keep it legal, but anything else to look for?
Thanks.

1st gen have the stiffer (and MUCH better looking) frames. I don't see the issue with carbs vs FI. I am yet to have ANY issues with my carbs and I haven't done a lick of maintenance on them. Just store with stabil in a full tank over the winter and run Techron through it in the spring.
Horsepower isn't much different either. 70 for the stock 1st gen and 72.5 for the stock 2nd gen.
Now, as far as purchasing for track riding/racing, you know to look for one that more set up. (rearsets, suspension upgrades, possible motor work, etc...)
There's an "argument" about the GSX-R fork swap, but the only con I see there is that you are no longer eligible to run Supersport classes. Since you said you want to run SS, the swap is out. you are able to change the master to a radial, but you cannot change the calipers or forks.
If the bike has had motor work, you are not allowed more than a 1mm overbore to stay SS legal.
i have a 1st gen supersport sv set up ready to go for sale

If this were a year from now, I would be all over it. Unfortunately I still have some things to take care of before I can buy a bike. Why are you selling it if you don't mind me asking? Different bike? I know you pretty much have the hookup when it comes to SV knowledge.Originally Posted by PPS26

So with the 1st gen being stiffer, is this a help or hindrance? This is really all for personal knowledge right now as I posted previously, but one thing I learned with my last foray into racing is that research is the key to keeping costs closer to budget.

all i know is u have to be careful with carbs that's the only downfall of the older gen

The differences between them are so minute, that it really just comes down to personal preference. Both gens have their own unique characteristic and both gens make terrific lightweight track bikes. I started out searching for a first gen, but a great deal on a 2nd gen fell in my lap. I'm sure I would have been happy with either one.
The general consensus is that the 1st gen handles SLIGHTLY better than the 2nd gen, but any slight chassis advantage that the 1st gen has over the 2nd gen is offset by the slight power advantage of the 2nd gen.

The 3rd gen is the best though!

Eh, it's alright. I wouldn't mind taking one for a spin that's in full out race trim.
But there's not NEARLY enough race support for them over here.

Thanks Pete, that was what I was looking for. More questions to come as the time to buy gets closer, I'm sure.Originally Posted by OreoGaborio
