Like everything I post, that's just an opinion. For better or worse.

    Solutions to your woes:
Don't crash. Or at least don't crash like Petorius does. / Don't ride naked. Invest in a body kit & sliders to try to protect the rad. / A fubar'ed rad is better than cracked up engine cases. Other water cooled bikes have wide rads too.
Don't convert to GP shift, stay normal people shift. / Pony up for the Woodcraft set. It's quality kit anyway.

    I know, I'm so helpful.

Hey OP, how about a Ducati supersport. From what I have seen, they make pretty good track day rides. Although I'm no expert.

I can only find one under $1500. Although I know a guy who recently picked up a 750ss for about $2k.

Shows what I know. Seen some pretty darn nice looking/sounding Ducati SS's posing as track bikes.

Call off the dogs - for now. Found something useful and practical. CBR F2. Some may have seen it at Rice-O-Rama. Right price, runs wicked pissa' and cleaned up well. Box of spares and even a triple clicker thrown in. Track days first next season - then from there who knows. Or... a good $$$ offer may change my mind as this is isn't exactly what I was looking for.
