    Transponder purchase

Looking for a transponder of my very own this year. Where should I start looking? New, used, wired or not, doesn't matter to me.

WeraClassifieds.com usually has them used. New they can be snagged from Street and Comp.

Yeah, they go fast and that was a pretty good deal. I'd be happy with anything under $300.

They pop up often enough though. Just gotta be trolling...

    Re: Transponder purchase

So it is my understanding that the old AMB 260 transponder is now the MyLaps Flex transponder, just looking at their site it appears they have a subscription option as well as a buy option. Just curious if anyone has used the subscription option? I know long term it doesn't make a lot of sense fiscally, but it might be worth it if you don't have $300+ to drop on a used transponder right now (or can't find one).

Track rents em for $25 a weekend....someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not exactly sure as I've come to realize after reading this thread that Chip gave me an absolutely killer deal on one (thanks a lot bud!). Also new racers get three free weekends of rentals.

Its $30 a weekend plus postage to return it when I take it home by accident. I may rent again this year and lurk around for a good deal.

That's why I was asking, if the track charges $30 a weekend, for 7 rounds, that's $210 for the season. The MyLaps site (http://www.mylaps.com/index.php/us_e...ex_transponder) rents them for $150/yr and you don't have to return it between rounds, it seems like its the better deal but there might be a catch??

Since I will be a novice, and I believe I get a free transponder rental for the first 3 rounds, it wouldn't make sense for me to do it this year, but I'm curious.

I missed that in your post! I may have to look into the year rental for this year. Last year was my first and it was great to get a transponder free for 3 rounds and I rented from the track for the remaining rounds so it was easier on the wallet.

Why not buy one used and then sell it when you are done with it for the same price?

If the battery won't recharge are they worthless? Might it die while being used?

I guess...just seems like a waste of money to rent one.

You can have a new battery installed for around $100. I did it and saved myself the hassle of spending another $300-$400 for another one.

I did mine last year. The guy that does battery replacements is in Australia. Like it was already mentioned, it was around $100 after shipping.
