Wanna help me mount ice tires and keep my knobbies?

    Hey guys,

I have the original rims that came with my sumo and I just bought some ice tires.

The rims have some knobbies on them, which I don't think I'll ever use.

Rather than pay somebody to mount the ice tires and then chucking the knobbies, I wanted to float this idea out there.

I have no idea how important age is for knobbies, but I can tell you that the tread is in good shape but they are probably several years old (my guess would be 5 years). The knobs on the front have sharp corners and the rear just shows a little bit of rounding on the front edges.

I have no idea where to look for a date code, etc. but I'll check when I go to my garage. I can also try to snap a couple pictures.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

I suspect I will be coming to you......I live in Davis square, and work out where 495 and Rt 2 meet if anybody is close to either one of those places.

    21/18, or 21/19??
Edit: I don't necessarily need or want the knobs, but I can help out if you wanna bring the sneaks down.

Re: Wanna help me mount ice tires and keep my knobbies?

hahaha.....I have no idea what the value is on either side of the equation here, but I guess that's at least half the answer.

What makes it suck so bad? On the rare occasion I needed new knobbies growing up, I think the shop threw them on - so I haven't even mounted regular knobbies before.

I was naively thinking that having studs in it wouldn't make any difference, but I guess there's that liner in there too.....and it's a tubed tire.

How much do people usually charge to mount ice tires?

I'm also open to tires + cash

    21/19.

After all these months on NESR I just now decoded your "Fairest of the Havens" lol. I'm not from around here, so I didn't know there was a Fairhaven, MA...I just thought you were really into LOTR or the like.

If I'm right about that, it looks like it's ~1.5 hours away. I appreciate the offer to help - I'll keep you in mind but lemme see if I can find somebody closer.

Re: Wanna help me mount ice tires and keep my knobbies?

A real ice tire has a liner in it. They are very stiff and the screws are sharp. The process usually ends with some bloodshed. It takes a little longer then regular dirt tires, just need to be careful or the screws.

Studs wont do shit for you on the ice. However if you want to try it I'll come watch you into the first turn.

Lord of the Rings. "Fairest of the Havens" has sort of an elvish sound to it.....

Screws / studs - I thought they meant the same thing.

The description is below, from what I've heard they're legit...although my first turn still might be entertaining....

    Screws-ice
    Studs-snow

Although I have a set of screwed knobbies I use in the woods, because it was a total of $40 for the investment.

Its really not that difficult to mount them. If you need help bring spoons over and we can get it done

Ductard, I am betting your fredettes aren't balanced - most people don't balance knobbies, let alone knobbies with screws in them. If that's accurate, it's very easy to change them - pickup some tire spoons, watch some youtube videos and go at it yourself.
