    Tachs

So I use my tach far more than I probably should, but I like it and it gives me a warm feeling in my leathers. Or maybe thats me pissing myself, regardless. I rode Daniels DRZ on the street and I was all fucked up without a tach. Of course my RMZ doesnt have one, so is it possible to hook one up, and does anyone have any recommendations, or should I stop being such a faggot and learn to ride without a tach?

    Re: Tachs

Well I use my tach 100% of the time on the starts, I need it there, I cant get used to starting without a tach.
And I always look at it on my second shift out of the bowl, I dunno why.
Im just more nervous cause I was so fucked up on Daniels bike, and I think I used my tach a lot more on the EX when I started, but Im used to it by now.

And Noel for 129 bucks Ill just get one of these for the starts
    http://www.motostrano.com/procilaco.html

I think Ill try to stop being a pussy, but hopefully Ill get the shifting sorted out in practice.

    Re: Tachs

I like the Tach on the starts as well. AND on the front straight.

The Hawk didn't have one last year and my starts suffered.

The vapor kit suck btw. Tach is all jumpy and namby pamby... maybe that would be good for you FAG!

Let me guess. Hmmmm….I’m guessin that this shift point is approximately within 10'-20' each lap!!

Find your shift point reference point in relation to the track surface/turn. This will tell you if you're going faster or slower. After gathering this information it becomes second hand and you can concentrate on other things that will make you faster. Then your shift points will change again. It is a vicious cycle.

Yah, I cant get myself to shake the habit, I dont know why. I dont look at the tach anywhere, including the first shift out of the bowl, but the second, I just stare at it.

    Re: Tachs

Let me rip the tach off. Then you will have to lean how to ride w/out it.

T8 helped me with this. I never really looked at it to begin with. Even when I have taken other bikes out I don't look down. You have to be one with the bike and feel what it is telling you Daniel-son. I mean Richie-son. Repetition, repetition, repetition.

    Re: Tachs

Well if theres a way to have a tach on the start, then shut it off, Im all ears.
Like I say, the start and that one shift is all I see on my EX, but learning a new bike with fucking Shane, Brent and Martire flying around me is gonna be a little scary. (And dear god if Jeff Wood has his tard out that day)

    Re: Tachs

Practice your start as well. The good thing about the tard is even if you are a little low in the revs (I keep it a little lower than most on the start) you can whack the fuckin throttle open and thing just pulls all the way through the range

Besides, Shane, Brent, Mike and Jeff will pass you in places you didn't think possible and be gone before you realize it.

    Re: Tachs

First weekend will probably be a little rough getting used to it. Do an early season trackday. Lots of time to get your shift pattern right.

Look at the "where do you shift" thread for Alex's early shift points and use that as a baseline before you even get to the track

You put a tach on your RMZ and I'm ripping it off while you sleep.

Motard has two throttle positions: Open and Closed.

    Re: Tachs

Richie, with all due respect, all that time you spend looking at that Goddamned tach I'm amazed that you even get around NHMS.....on starts, out of 6 and the following shift into 7/8.

Must tune your ears in, son. Every engine lays down at top end....you can feel it (well, at least I can feel it)...gotta learn that feeling and teach your ears what that sounds like.

As far as the starts, dude, come up to the dragway and pull some straight line duty...that's a sure-fired way of perfecting your launches without using the tach. You can't see the tree aaaand use the tach at the same time.

I'll gladly tell you the secret.....but not here in the open...
...(it's the same secret I'm going to use when I hand Noel his ass on the strip next year)

Seriously, get used to not relying so much on that tach and you'll easily pickup a second or better.

I dont rely on the tach, except the start, and I have amazing starts. Im rarely behind anyone getting into one. And I dont really rely on it out of 6, I just stare at it, I honestly dont know why. I really dont look at it otherwise, the straight occasionally, but usually not.
I was just so thrown not having one at all, I dunno, it was just weird. I couldnt get used to that bike. I think its like a safety net, its nice that its there, but when its not I tense up

As you know, I'm a firm believer of minimizing distractions by removing the use of the gauge cluster.

    gauges promote curiosity
    curiosity promotes distraction

If all else fails, here is the end all be all of tachometers:

so learn what your bikes feel/sound like at proper shifting rpm. then you'll know where to launch it and lose the obsession with anything other than a tiny temp gauge.
