A Long Loudon Classic report. (pics, victory, lavapits and more)

Loudon Classic Recap – My 1st Win

So here we go again. My 3rd weekend of Racing Action yet I’d been standing in this same infield 6 days prior for the June 11th races. During that weekend of hellish heat I’d sweated off 10lbs, destroyed a set of tires, taken home some hardware, run a 24.0 (down from 26.0), and learned some thangs about my competition.

Basically going into this weekend my goal was to try and keep the front runners close during the opening laps and try to ‘keep em honest’ during the race. One of those cats is #514 Jeff Thomayer, who tends to do a opening lap about 6 seconds faster than I do (jesuschrist) I had no idea if I could run with Jeff because I’d never gotten close enough to him during a race to see his pace. I bumped down to Red Practice this weekend to do some laps with a friend and this allowed me to watch Jeff ride Blue Practice. That dude can ride.

Anyhow my other goal was to enter a 3rd race this weekend so I could reach the minimum 10 race advancement stage quicker. I had 4 races ever under my belt and hopefully would have 7 after this. I decided to enter Race 4 Middleweight Supersport, which is a little absurd considering I’m on a 88 Hawk and would be going up against 2000-2005 600’s.. *shrug* my friend was in this race those so who cares! Last goal was to have some fucking major fun.

    Race 5 – Middleweight Supersport
I got a pretty good start and found myself 5th as we got sorted out. 1st and 2nd were quickly disappearing but I was right on the ass of the guys in 3rd and 4th and gaining. Before I had time to figure out a way around these two guys… RED FLAG. Getting back to the grid I had one thought *Get a Good Start* so I could avoid being stuck behind guys in corners and maybe chase the leaders. HAHA. Instead I totally flubbed the start and did an awesome sideways wheelie off the line, settled the bike, and did another one going the other direction. I ended up in last going into Turn 1, needless to say I was pissed off. I went way inside in Turn 3, four riders abreast, (guess the Announcer said I was ‘out of control’) in a attempt to pass as many guys as I could. I worked my way up to 6th in the next few laps and had a bit of a problem with 5th. Couldn’t get around this dude in the normal spots, as he just blew my doors off down the straights. On lap 3 I tried stuffing him in 2, 3, 9, and 11. Everytime he shut the door. As I set about doing it again on lap 5 we got Red Flagged. Guess whose buddy was running across the track exiting 3? Oh yea.. MY BUDDY. Haha. Anyhow I ended up 6th on the sheets, which is weird considering my friend in 4th crashed out.. causing a Red Flag, yet still was given 4th in the results. *shrug* Weird.

I learned that racing 600’s is akin to herding cats. Fun for a few minutes, but overall frustrating. Off to more level playing fields :]

    Race 8 – Lightweight Supersport
Ah yes. The first race of the day with the usual gang. 514 was there, 170 was there, buncha SV’s, fun stuff. Don’t remember much about this race. Got a decent start (hey no wheelies Ma!) and found myself watching Jeff disappear (he got the holeshot.. again) as I played around in 4th or something. Spent a lap or so trying to get around the 170 Ducati of Todd Malvezzi which gave me 2nd. Put the head down for the rest of the race but realized with 2 laps to go that I wasn’t going to catch Jeff. Settled into ‘Cruise Control’ and just kept looking back to make sure 3rd and 4th weren’t getting too close. Good fun race.

    Race 13 – Ultralight Superbike
Going into race 13 I told myself I wasn’t going to let Jeff do the disappearing trick again. I basically had to quit doing 32’s on my start lap and just ride like hell, which is an interesting gauntlet since I was the only fellah out of the top guys without Tire Warmers. (the Sun doesn’t count).

So I got another solid start but I was gridded behind Todd and Jeff so no surprise as I slotted in behind them going into turn 1. I wanted to get by Todd ASAP but didn’t have much luck in the early corners. Yes Jeff was pulling away might I add. Going into Turn 12 I told my tires “Hey Guys hope you are warmed up” and pinned it. Came up next to Malvezzi on the straight and we dragged into Turn 1 side by side. I figured I would outbreak him and that was that. By lap 3 I was right on the rear wheel of Jeff’s KTM looking for a hole. We drifted wide in 6 but I thought I had more track as I went to his right on the exit. WELL GUESS WHAT! I didn’t have more track. I almost rode of the bloody track, right foot off the peg, on the dirty curbing about 1” from the gravel. After I got done shitting myself and putting on a show for the folks in the bleachers I got busy trying to recapture that KTM. Caught him a few laps later and think I made the pass in turn 4. Told myself DON’T LOOK BACK and for once my head listened. With 2 laps to go I shit myself yet again. This time it was Jeff’s fault because he decided to try and come up next to me on the OUTSIDE of turn 3 as we were getting on the brakes. WTF does that! Maybe everyone does.. all this racing shit is new I guess but man, ballsy move. How he didn’t ride in the grass I’ll never know but I sure wasn’t expecting a KTM handlebar next to my head on the 1.5’ of paving over there. Anyhow he didn’t crash (I looked back..) and chased my ass for the rest of the race.

    I won.

WOO. Yup. Pretty fun. We had a good time on the cool down lap. High fives and all that shit. People were actually clapping and all this nonsense in the crowd. For Novices? Come on, we felt like Rossi and Company. I was even interviewed by that track MC guy. I said ‘ASS’ on the MIC much to his chagrin. So what I was excited.

Anyhow. I think the coolest thing was after the race. I guess we put on quite the show. The MC must have been talking about it because Wood and Greenwood were harassing me about it later on. “Heard you were running 22’s!” “Oh won a race did you”. ETC ETC. Bastards. Also was dope finally talking to Jeff after the race. Cool thing was he’d never gone that fast either, kinda pushed each other. (Jeff btw is a super nice guy, hell of a rider, and safe / run to race close with) We ended up 30 seconds ahead of 3rd place and we got Loudon Classic Beer Mugs. SCORE.

So that’s the end of my story. I’m happy cause I had a good time. Met a ton of new people (hello NESR guys), ran consistent 22’s and 23’s, and it didn’t rain. Sorry if this was a long post.. but I warned ya.. and fuck, I was excited. Cya on the 23rd of Joo-LIE.

Thanks Evilbikes.com, Hcor.net, and Rice-Rocket1 from NESR for taking the bitchin’ pics.

Bump for a good read. Is it time to race yet? With my street riding cut out for this year, I'm starting to get antsy on the drive home seeing all those shiny new bikes out there.
