    1 up 5 down switch?

Is it possible for me to switch the shift pattern on a 2001 929RR to 1 up 5 down pattern without installing rearsets?
    Thanks ,
    Dan

Usually as long as the shift linkage doesn't pass through the frame (a la Yamaha 'R's') it's pretty simple. Usually nothing more than just flipping the linkage arm over on the shift shaft...

In a word, easier. Yip, it's easier to shift that way. The best way I can explain is this: How many times have you hit a false neutral while UPshifting? Don't lie! Now how many times have you hit false neutral while DOWNshifting? That's right, NEVER! Switch your lever around, now you'll be every gear dead nuts when you UPshift...

'Course, racers do this so they can UPshift in T-7 at Loudon...

Coming out of a left hand turn with your knee on the deck it is risky to get your foot under the shift lever to upshift because you can easily catch your boot between the pavement and the lever. Also, when you are in a right hand turn way off the right side of the bike it is physically impossible for short guys (like me and most pro racers) to actually REACH the shift pedal, let alone get our foot under it.

With reverse shifting you just have to tap down on the lever to upshift, much easier.

Just a little FYI not all racers use the GP style shifting. I for one don't like it. I would rather miss a up shift going down the front straight then missing a down shift going into turn one or turn 3 at 80-90 MPH.
If you are asking what AMA racer uses the standard shift style, just ask the 2003 AMA superbike champ and he will tell you the standard is what works for him.

I will say that you both make good points. I didn't think of this in terms of racing because I never have raced before. Stoneman, you make a good point about the false neutral shift , done that before and I guess, just for regular riding (not racing) it would make more sense to false it into neutral while downshifting. I think that I would get awfully confused the first few times around though

Yep, absolutely standard for Mr. Mladin...

....with undercut gears and a shift kit. Makes a HUGE difference.

Good point about undercut gears, and shift kit....
the gear box in one of those Zukis are tighter than a....well you know what I mean....

Of course, maybe the brain is too narrow to become accustomed to a reverse shifting pattern?

    I'll ride em either way...
