A friend of mine just had his 999 done and was $1000+. just seems a bit pricey , I understand the hole belt -timing thing and you have to know what you are doing, maybe a valve adj, but a 1000+. anyone have any info on the 1098 and whats involved ?

    1098 maintenance?

1k is way out of whack. That was likely for some full service with chain adjustment, checking tire tread depth, and a host of other BS. Just get the valves adjusted and it should run around 300 bucks for a four valve ducati.

    1098 maintenance?

I paid 180 for my first service, but there is no question that there will be a few expensive ones.

Ducati's as with the other european brands have higher maintenence costs. I dont think 1000 is typical. May have been some other parts or unusual issues?

yeah but that's not belts, valves etc. that's an oil change and quick once over.
A full service on a four valve duc is steep

    1098 maintenance?

I'm in the process of getting together all the tools necessary (about $2k worth with shims, tools etc) to fully service 2 and 4 valve Ducks. I'll be doing a full service on my 999 to test the tools out and make sure I have everything needed. I expect a belt/valve/oil/tb synch job to cost in the region of $600 including parts if I am doing it (belts for a 999 are $180 a set).

By the way, the 999 deep-sump motor is good for 50k between valve adjustments according to Bruce Meyers. I think he was exaggerating a bit, but it does have a reputation for being VERY reliable. The 1098 is looking to be the same. I'm seeing most people who have checked state that the valves are not out of spec most times.

By the way, was there any other parts involved with the $1k service? Valve job should be about $400, belts are $180 plus maybe $100 to install. it's quite a reach to get to $1k from there.

Ducati valves are not voodoo or rocket science, they are just different and you need some special tools and a little knowledge, that's all.

    1098 maintenance?

thnks kb, ya that should have never happened. on the larry lap lol, i was following the girl hopeing that being a racer she could at least make it out to the track off the hot pit, but i guess i was wrong. still waiting for the insurance co to get back to me, but either way its all being fixed to perfection. thw kawi's back together too. gunna be ready for oct but i still need to find the correct length shock linkage for my bike or i'm gunna be running pretty slow times.

Dude that blows. I lock my shed and then I have a New Yorker chain from kryptonite that I lock everything together inside the shed. If they're gonna get em at least they are going to have to work for it!!

I usually keep my shit out of sight I come home right in the shed. I take it out right out of the yard. Never leave it in plain sight.

    1098 maintenance?

Ducati's..... you either learn how to work on them yourself, or work a second job so someone else can do it for you...

Degs is right with the Testaretta motors. None of the flaking rocker arm problems of the quattro's, and a pretty solid built motor. The electrionics are a little whacky (get the red AND black keys!), but otherwise, solid.

1,000$ for a valve adjustment is ridiculous. I could see 1,000$ if they had to shim all of the valves, but thats likely not the case. Compared to a traditional I-4, I still say the Duc's are easier to adjust.

They should call Production Twins what it really is, Shitty McBikefest. Rules for Participation: If your bike runs lower laptimes than a lawnmower, you are not eligibile for Shitty McBikefest. -Darrell

Wow, I wouldn't even bother with bikes if I had to live like that. Some of you guys would cringe if you knew the level of security (or lack there of) that I use...

    1098 maintenance?

Funny thread.I always get kicks out of the overblown maintainance costs.Even the subject of how intensive it is.I can easily remove my cams and i don't even have the crazy easy Testastretta. But i'm currently w/o the Duc until i can fit the new Pistals' to my chambers. Then i need to set compression ratio down to 13:1..It ain't rocket science.I've needed to adjust only a couple valves at two of four checks in 14K miles. Also replaced three flaked rockers at $45 ea. I've got cams removal tool/degree wheel/covers puller/rocker shaft puller/shim kit/Mathesis v0.6/belt tension tool/cams pulley tools, besides the normal mechanics set.The price of admission? Well, the Japanese racers ARE less intensive..true enough
