    1973 RD 350 Project

Seeking suggestions for a RD 350 resto project. Leaning towaard Cafe Racer MODS. Has anyone here had experience with these bikes? I'm really looking for suggestions regarding possible electronic ignition, eliminate points, and the oil injection system, eliminate or keep? Your opinions, suggestions and experiences are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Re: 1973 RD 350 Project

I've got a '72 R5, check out www.2strokeworld.com , Nick at Vintage Smoke has a nice Dyna setup to replace the points, I got one during my build. Pretty simple installation, and low maintenance. As far as the oil injection, you'll hear strong opinions both ways. I wanted to keep it on mine, but even after rebuilding my pump I get air in the left side sometimes. I'm probably going to block it off and mix, and put a petcock on the oil tank and use it as a reservoir instead of carrying quarts of oil around.

Keep the pump if you intend riding it distances, refueling a premix bike is a pain in the ass. Dyna ignition is a good investment but points are easy once you know what you are doing. If you intend riding look for an early RD with front disc brake, much better than the earlier drum brakes!

My RD back then fouled plugs daily

Ended up having hot plugs to warm it up and then change to cold plugs for the ride

Most people ended up running car coils strapped to the down tubes

    Change the ignition

Keep the oil injection, just pull it all off and clean it up nice, check the pump stroke and bleed it etc.....simple, pretty bullet proof if you keep the oil tank clean and do not mix oils! Stick to one oil injection brand.
