2001 KTM 250 SX - top end bits and other bits

If all goes smooth I'll be picking her up Friday. Probably more MX oriented than my trail-riding self needs but I love a good challenge and it's a great deal.

Needs a top end though. Should I just grab this Wiseco kit on eBay or is there something better?

Any advice on stuff to look out for or items I should replace with unknown service history? Bike looks pretty well-loved for a prehistoric beast

congrats! you'll be able to tweak it towards woods no sweat.

on the top end kit, you could maybe look for a ProX kit with cast piston, might be even cheaper. i doubt it has a forged piston in it so i wouldn't worry about that aspect.

with 17 years on the clock, i'd inspect everything ... but you know all that

Sweet, thanks! I'll check out the ProX.

All the basics look pretty fresh - chain/sprockets/seals/etc but I'll see it in person in a few days.

With engine parts I like to go oem. See what the price is for stockers.

Yeah, stick with oem. Bring the jug to your local KTM crackdealer so they can check to see if you need an A or B piston, and just move along with your standard gasket kit. This stuff is only as hard as you make it.
You’ll probably end up walking out of there with a moose or a vertex piston, but you’ll likely have spent about the same and definitely have the right stuffs.

Good info thanks. Guessing I could measure the jug with a micrometer and order direct from Vertex as well? Although not sure I trust my crappy meter down to .01.

So it sounds like the forged piston tends to expand more and the OEM/Vertex/Moose are cast and can get a tighter tolerance when measured out?

Just get a B piston from vertex. Common practice is to use B after your first top end swap. No measuring necessary. I have even heard people run B in a fresh cylinder.

Right on so I'll probably go for the Vertex B which is 66.35mm -- looks like the only one they have on their site. Interestingly the Wiseco is 66.40mm only which is the equivalent of the C/D ProX?

    I have things to learn...

Difference between forged and cast expansion rates mean different starting diameters to reach the same operating diameter and bore clearance.

    First person with cash wins!

So, what are your requirements, price range, and how far are you willing to drive? I hate to just randomly spam CL links, especially one 2 states over, but this guy seems up your alley. 2003 KTM 200 exc - motorcycles/scooters - by owner - vehicle automotive bike sale

Re: 2001 KTM 250 SX - top end bits and other bits

Yeah it was definitely about to explode and catch fire, I dodged the bullet there lol

He was like 4 hours away so I couldn't jump on it, but we did have an agreement and meeting time set up.. not something I would have pulled but not entirely surprising. Was actually trading an AK setup + cash, for the time being I'll be keeping an eye out for a decent trade/fixer upper, if nothing comes along I'll probably suck it up and spend some cash when my other bikes are sorted. On the bright side I still have my AK!
