I am the God of false neutrals!

Took the new to me Aprilia to the TTD yesterday. Its equipped with a DynoJet quick shifter. I was having some real issues with it upshifting when going over the hill in T5 at NHMS. 90% of the time, it would hit a false neutral, then go into the gear I wanted it to be in.

I spoke to a few others who use quickshifters and they're puzzled. I tried a few different methods, slowly pushing the lever down, pushing the lever down, then leaving my foot on the pedal, and a quick hard push on the pedal. It was only over T5 that I had the issue. Upshifting on the front straight was fine, although once in a while, the bike would seem to "skip" or pause in acceleration.

Someone suggested replacing the activation switch, with one that is a pressure type and attaches directly to the shifter rod. The one I have activated linearly with a piece that rotates off of the shifter knuckle.

I did give Oxx and Rob a good show. I pulled a nice wheelie when it hit neutral and then caught while I was still on the gas. I also almost went over the bars when similar happened and it caught halfway down the hill. I hut the brakes so hard that the rear wheel came off the ground and stayed up for at least 3 seconds before touching back down.

I'm inclined to just disconnect the quick shifter and just ride stock, but I'd really like to work through this problem, even if it is how I'm shifting. I just find it odd that I didn't have any issues upshifting on the front straight.

Re: I am the God of false neutrals!

This is why I don't like them...

THe "skipping" was likely when you accidentally bumped or pressed the shifter just far enough to activate the switch, but not far enough to shift gears.

After having helped a firend of mine with the install on two of his bikes, the pressure switch which is part of the shift rod is the way to go. I haven't heard of false neutrals from him at all.

So when you went into the bowl with the rear wheel in the air, did you end up tipping in like marquez only using the front?

That whole issue is a little hyped. I have done that many times while passing into T3. I see other motoGP riders do it all the time. Marquez is not unique there. He is just pushing a little harder on the brakes, so it happens to him more often.

What brand quickshifter? The bazzaz I have uses the switch as part of the rod and I havent ever had a false neutral on it.

Are your shift times programmable? Could be the culprit there.

True story, you passed me while executing that graceful maneuver. I had just moved up to yellow and thought "damn this group is aggressive".

No, I only had one session left, so I didn't bother. To be honest, I have to look at the instructions to figure out how to do it.

True, see below. It wasn't one of those rear tire goes 2" in the air. It went up over a foot, which i higher than Marquez does and stayed up there for what seemed like an eternity. It must have been a good 50-100'.

    See OP. It's a DynoJet.

We do try to make it interesting. All that I know is that I was headed for the gravel trap with my ass-end in the air. When it came down and I slowed a little, I looked at the sky and said "Thank You".

Current switch is a linear pull type. It seems to be pretty senitive. As soon as the shift pedal is depressed 1/8", I hear the click inside the switch, which I assume is the point where the switch sends the signal to pause spark.

Here's what the switch looks like:

If you plug into it with your laptop, it should show what the cuts are set too. Sounds like a simple adjustment.

Is the shaft of that switch mechanism threaded? I'm guessing you can make the switch less sensitive by loosening that lock nut and turning the shaft clockwise into the knuckle on the shifter arm.

Yes. The crap on the exhaust is the chain lube that came on the chain. (New chain) why do you ask?

Hey Chuck. That shifter is set to 90ms. Sometimes I would miss a shift with that quick shifter, at T5, but not more that once a session. It didn't happen after I installed the Factory Pro shift star. I'll give you a call tomorrow.

Raise the shift lever a hair to get a more positive shift. See if the helps. Also you can go into the power commander software & check what the kill time is in that gear & add more kill to see if that helps. I would try these things first before you go any further

I use to miss upshifts with regularity going throught t5. Turn out I had worn a hole in the sole of my boot, combined that with being of the other side of the bike...but new boots, no more problems.

I tried that. If I move it any further up, the lever may be too high to make an effective downshift. And I KNOW what a false neutral into T1 feels like.
