Am I screwed? Stoneman, TLRMan - clicky

So maybe a week ago, I changed the oil on my bike. It's the easiest thing in the world to do - 10 minute job at best - but somehow I manage to fuck up nonetheless. Today I go to show someone the bike, and after it was sitting for about 5 minutes, I notice a small drop of oil. After a while, that little spot got a little bigger, so I knew it was from my bike. I get home and I try to tighten the bolt, but I can only get it so tight before it goes loose (loose enough to take the bolt off with my fingers). At the tightest point I can get it, it is too tight to loosen with my fingers, but not nearly as tight as I tightened it last time. So I'm almost positive I stripped the oil pan.

Yeah yeah, I should've used a torque wrench. And yeah I forgot to throw on one of those washers. But what do I do now?

The worst part is that I probably fucked up the sale because of it.

Oh, the bike is a 2000 TL1000S, btw.

Check the bolt to see if it is just the bolt that is stripped, you might be lucky.

Most likely the drain hole is stripped also. You will have to order a new sump from Suzuki. I wouldn't bother with trying a helicoil or oversizing the bolt hole.

Drain the oil again and change the filter. With the sump off you should be able to get to the screen to see if any bits of metal are in there.

Put in fresh oil after replacing the sump and pray like you have never prayed before.

I have done this also, so you are not alone.

    derek

The problem is the TLS cases are vertically split and there is no sump (Oil Pan) to replace. The hole is part of the engine cases so your best bet is to Helicoil. There is also a company that sells oversized bolts that you could try.

    I would helicoil.

    Sorry just saw this one....

Yup helicoil inserts.....put ample amount of grease on drill and tap when you do the job...will catch most of the chips that get cut.

Then go out and get some cheapie oil, and pour it in, and let it drain to flush out what you missed.

    Good luck...

    I can't spell!

    I was afraid of that.

Good luck, and careful with that helicoil.

Well, I called the guy that I have do work on my bike, and he mentioned helicoil inserts too, so it looks like that what I'll have to do. I'm dropping it off tomorrow and have him go at it. I'll also prolly have him throw on a set of Pilot Sports as well.

Figures this would happen as I finally find someone who was interested in buying it.

Hopefully its just the bolt/plug. That would be sweet, but as luck would have it(with me at least) it won't work out that way. Let us know what happened.

    HI:

I did the same thing myself last summer on my Yamaha FJ1200. I was being paranoid, because the summer BEFORE last, I hadn't tightened the oil-bolt ENOUGH, and the oil drain plug FELL OUT while I was doing 75 MPH on I-93 south in Andover. That was a scary exepreince.

So I took it to BikeWorx, he heli-coiled it, and I dont deal with soft-metal drain pans anymore. I just don't trust myself, plus I dont have anyplace to do work on my bike.

    Nuff' said.
