    Re: Autozone oil deal

    Unfortunately

Here in the USA there is NO REAL SYNTHETIC produced by the majors Mobil1, Castrol, Valvolene all whats called purified and reformated dyno oil Group 3
Not crap but NOT synthetic as a designed molecule as in PAO* or Ester based.

Amsoil, Redline, some motuls are true synthetics

    * The original PAO (poly alpha olefin I think) was this cool fork shaped molecule that when under load the forks would tangle so it had great film strength but would flow. Dyno oil can be anything but most alkanes are just long mostly straight chains, and you don't get the fork.

I make my own synthetic blend for the street bike like 1/3 redline and the rest bogus synthetic Rotella Diesel Oil, I did maintain good shifting for 5000 miles and it came out clear as a bell

If you want true synthetic for cars from castrol get the 0 30 made in Germany. Look at the back of the bottle and it will say made in Germany instead of made in the USA.

Shell T6 at Tractor Supply, $19.99 for 4 quarts...less if you buy it by the 2.5-5 gallon buckets

I've only a few words for the full synthetic..... want vs need

Interesting. I never ever thought any further than getting what i thought was good oil. I guess there is a bit more to it.

That "guide" is a bit out of date at this point but it highlights a lot of basics in an easy way to understand, the second link explains how in the USA you can sell a synthetic that is not a true synthetic.

    API Base Stock Groups:

Lubricant base stocks are categorized into five groups by the API:

Group I base stocks are composed of fractionally distilled petroleum which is further refined with solvent extraction processes to improve certain properties such as oxidation resistance and to remove wax. These oils are no longer very common and should never be used in an automotive engine.

Group II base stocks are composed of fractionally distilled petroleum that has been hydrocracked to further refine and purify it. These oils comprise many of the single grade motor oil you see on the shelf.

Group III base stocks have similar characteristics to Group II base stocks, except that Group III base stocks have higher viscosity indexes. Group III oils are produced by further hydrocracking of Group II base stocks, or of hydroisomerized slack wax. Manufacturers label Group III oils as standard motor oil or as synthetic in the US for marketing purposes. It depends on the level of refinement and additive pack. The ACEA in Europe does not allow a Group III oil to be labeled as “synthetic”.

Group IV base stocks are polyalphaolefins (PAO). These were the 1st synthetic oils produced.

Group V is a catch all group for any other synthetic base stocks. Examples of Group V base stocks include polyol esters (POE), polyalkylene glycols (PAG oils), and perfluoropolyalkylethers (PFPAEs). In addition, base stocks using Fischer-Tropsch-synthesis (gas-to-liquid) fall in this group.

POE oils are the most common Group V oils (Red Line for example), in fact, POE oils are used for lubrication in jet turbines and are some of the best oils available. All the Group V oils represent the latest in petroleum technology. But, just because oil is classified as Group V doesn’t mean that it’s better….Group V oils are simply synthetics that are not PAO based.

Castrol.syntec I hope. My two audis I used 10w 40 I think it was..and it liked that. If you are using conventional oil... emmm well I would go back to a synthetic oil. The rotella t6 is a synthetic 5w40 weight.

in my bike, I use Honda only oil. from what I understand they are specifically designed with metals in your engine taken into account.

in my car I always use mobile1 which I assumed was synthetic

    Re: Autozone oil deal

Two of the Syntec blends are VAG whatever-whatever approved. I run it pretty much exclusively in my 2.0t TSI Jetta. I started doing it to maintain compliance with the warranty. I kept doing it out of dumb habit. I get it for reasonable money at Autozone. They do a deal very frequently.

Oh fuck.. I just posted in an oil thread.

I'm hoping they start making motor oil in addition to their gun oil. Not synthetic but I'd use the shit out of it.

Mobil one synthetic meets HTO-06 specifications. Along with amsoil and pennzoil platinum. Good enough for me to say it's good enough.
