Battery issue - bike won't start

My 2010 848 shut off while doing around 20-30 mph yesterday. Bike seems to turn over but won't start.

Battery voltage indicator was giving me a reading of 11 which is below the 12.1-14.9 range it should be. Got it home and put the battery tender on. Got it back to range but again won't start. I suppose next step is to get a voltage meter and start getting readings with the ignition on and off.

Any ideas on what else I want to check? Not sure how old battery is. At least several years.

    Thanks in advance.

If it turns over easy then the battery is not your issue. Enough to turn over is more than enough to run.
You'll need the motor running to diagnose the charging system. Fix that first.
Key on/off voltage levels are not that interesting. You are most interested in engine running @ ~3-4k. At that RPM there should be >13VDC reading off the R/R. Less and you have a problem with either the stator or the R/R or both.

The old battery on my GS had enough power to turn it over, but still no start. Just didn't have enough punch.

    Can you bump start it?

    I would debate that statement.

If the battery has enough voltage to turn the engine, that's one thing. If the starter is dragging the voltage down far enough, there is a point where the ECU (in this case) will not have enough voltage to function even though the starter sounds like it's rolling the engine over just fine.

This is common with older Polaris ATV's. Plenty of voltage to turn the engine over but not enough to actually get spark.

Shutoff while riding, sound like electrical issue to me...I would check, Fuses, Spark and fuel pump to start

More like, of course I would because "enough to turn over is more than enough to run" is a false statement.

Re: Battery issue - bike won't start

Some electronics need at least 9 volts to fire

When a weak battery is turning it over the system voltage will drop below and ECU and injec tors will not function

I would jump it from a car (carefully) if she fires right up its the batter

an abused battery 1 year a cared for battery maybe 5, let it drain to nothing and its toast, or a POOR maintainer and its cooked

If you can check fluid and add distilled water (supermarket) if it needs it

Re: Battery issue - bike won't start

I should have been more broad in my subject. Not sure it's a battery issue anymore. First of all, thank you to those who have contributed. It's really nice to have a community like this. Upon further research I am wondering if my fuel filter disconnected. When I turn the engine over with the fuel cap open I see a swishing inside the tank. Not sure if that is supposed to happen.

I am going to take the tank off an inspect the inside to see if everything is still connected.

Thanks Johnny. I certainly will. Here's the thread:

And here is the outcome. Pulling the fuel pump out of the tank was like the moment when you pull a baby out of the womb and have that aha reveal. "It's a boy". Or, "it's a disconnected hose".

They just don't crimp 'em like they used to. I'm guessing the hoses can't stand the ethanol?

SSC would agree with you. My thoughts having watched previously referred to thread is poor clamp design. Other theories include rough riding/jarring from a wheelie. I don't buy that one.
