    bent valve

compression test on my SV revealed 210psi rear/90 front, I've been quite a bit of oil the past 500 miles or so, about a half quart every tank off gas, but still only showing smoke on startup & hard acceleration/deceleration

engines all torn apart now ( case is not split) the culprit being one of my front exaust valves not seating properly, quite a bit of play in the valve guide, lot of carbon around that exaust port.

otherwise engine is very clean for 135k (210 in rear is as near to perfect as you can get)

if measurements on rod deflection is ok, looks like a new top end only

    wow

Thats one job that intimidates the shit out of me. So whats the story, what do u actually need to adjust/replace with that kinda mileage? Is it just a matter of replacing the culprit valve?

no, head has to be machined, new valve seat cut, and new valve guide pressed in

I'll be gitting new pistons & rings too (oversize) prolly bump my cc's up from 645 to 652 (I think if I calculated right ) I "might" consider a 677cc or 700cc kit if the price diff isn't much

MY bet is I damaged the valve a couple years ago when I downshifted into 1st @ 70mph,the valve is not noticably bent, it just doesn't seat right

Have him put stainless steel valves in there Randy, they're better and cost the same as standard.

looks like I'm likley bringing the sV home in a box and tinker as I have time, in meantime buy a new V-Strom

all the valve guides are shot, they don't come as a separate item to press in = new heads

cylinders are worn beyond what an overbore can cure

we can't figure out why the cam chains haven't broke yet = split case to replace the chains, might's well add an oil pump to the list

That's the bike for you Randy. The SV served you well.

I'm sure you can put new valve guides in it, even if Suzuki does not list them. Not sure it's worth fixing though, I'd think a used engine would be a piece of cake to get for such a popular bike. Good luck, either way.

used 2second gen SV engines are very common, first gen engines are harder to find but theres still plenty

I haven't checked into aftermarket valve guides, but they are not available thru Suzuki, even if I can find them, I still have head machining necessary , it would save only $500-600 over new heads

Even if I do get the V-strom (1k) I still wanna get the SV going again and keep it for a daily rat bike, maybe slowly rebuild it with performance parts or a used engine, not sure

That motor is shot Randy. The only reason it lasted so long is because you used it so often. If you had let it sit, I doubt it would even start up!

I wouldn't feel bad about discarding that whole bike. It's likely not all that safe anymore. I bet the frame and suspension components are in a similar state of fatigue...

135K miles is a pretty damn good run on a bike. Most people dont get that out of their cars.

I cant believe you cant cut/press in new valve guides. Thats a pretty poor design on Suzuki's side.

I dont know that I would throw it out either. I'd keep it in the back of the garage, and buy parts on ebay to get it back together. You dont owe anything on it, and it doesnt owe you anything. Why just walk away?

suzuki has a part # for the valve guides but it is obsolete, unless I can find someone who has old stock it is no longer available thru suzuki, they changed the head design , valve guides would have to be machined or maybe aftermarket, I haven't checked yet

valveguides are available for the new heads

basicly what were talkin about is marketing designed to get people to buy new bikes
