05 R getin super hot to the touch

Recently after a short ride the engine and frame of my bike get super hot, so much so that its about to burn my leg. Just last week i changed the oil and topped off the coolant ( the coolant was a diffrent color than the cooland that was in there yellow) but dont see how doing these things would make the bike hot. btw the thermostat only says 185 or so, far from overheating. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It's 95 freaking degrees out dude, don't worry about it.

If the coolant temp says 185, you're ok.

The frame on my R1 gets ridiculously hot after riding for a while, and on a 90* day the temps will read anywhere from 190-220* while riding. It's just that these bikes were designed to run hot.

One thing you can do that has given people some relief from the heat is 1) At Water Wetter or other additive to the coolant, and 2) Gutting the cat will also help in reducing the heat.

You can grab it any motorcycle shop that carries it, Autozone also carries it, and you can also get it on the internet.

I used to worry when my only watercooled bike would nudge a little over 210.
BCM Ducati reassured me a few times that they're just fine at 200.And in racing conditions are even fine to 260. Bruce Meyers, the Ducati guru said they're fine to 260.So i've taken his advice.I mean they're just at running temperature at 200 anyways. All of my frames(well, not the old BMW) get hot, especially in hot weather the Ducati will burn

Edit: oh yeah, keep in mind that the fuel injection meters depending on temperature.Make the ECU think it's cold and you risk poor performance.

the bikes were NOT designed to run hot!

they were not designed to run slow around town.

if you stay around 70mph everthing stays cool, even the subframe (the thing that cooks your legs)

I absolutely agree that they weren't designed to cruise. My 996 refuses to even run below 4000 RPM.

But now the question becomes'...What's a normal operating temperature?
It's AT LEAST 180 me thinks

But the normal temperature even when cruising for my year R1 has been reported to be in the 185-200 range. Under normal cruising conditions, with nothing wrong and new coolant, this is pretty much the norm for this bike. The R6 I'm assuming is the same way, but I haven't spent much time over on the R6 forums so I don't really know.

My TLR runs between 185 and 187 regardless what the temp is out. Stop in traffic and it'll shoot right to 220, fans blasting. Yes, you can cook an egg on the frame too. Most of these alum frames pull the heat quite well.

Ditto with my TLR. You think yours throws heat? Try sitting on wunna those in traffic on a hot day. That rear cylinder'll fry your boys...

Try the RC51 with the fancy side mount radiators. Not only do you get the heat from the motor but you get a nice hot breeze on your legs when the fans kick on at 220.

Fans on gixxers don't even kick on till 220. It's not an Yami, but I doubt there is that much difference in operating temps.

my 04 with no cat, a chip and blue ice. runs 165-185 under my normal cruising conditions.

then again my normal cruising conditions more than likely aren't the same a yours.
about the only time my engine is below 8k is when i'm coming to a stop and spends most of it's time above 10k

the blue ice (or what ever it's called) did make a difference as did the chip, stock the bike was running way to lean.

btw: if it's 85+ i'm not riding the bike i'm fishing.

I noticed after installing the power commander, filter and exhaust that my bike runs really hot. At red lights I see temps in the low 200's after being at speed. U shouldn't have anything to worry about. Has it overheated? If it hasn't worry then.

Not sure but you know mixing types of coolant can
    cause it to deteriorate.

If you are unsure and know its not just your imagination
then just drain, flush and refill with new stuff.

yea, I was thinking the same. This might be the reason. I mixed green coolant with yellow coolant. I'll drain sometime this week and see how it goes.

in my zx12 water wetter is a must. I'm considering getting a manual fan switch which will also help my heat.

what types of coolant did you actually mix? It's fine to run hot the way it is, but I'm thinking you may want to drain and refill. Sounds like maybe there was a premix in there and you topped off with straight coolant or something like that. In a lot of cases water is going to keep it cooler than straight coolant. Coolant by design is just to keep the bits and pieces of the cooling system moving, keep it from freezing and minimize the evaporation of water.
