    bike won't start

And yeah I read davids thread.

When I try to fire it up the starter sounds "different" and it just won't turn over and eventually backfires. I had the carbs cleaned new plugs new battery and took her out for a 350+ mile ride on sunday and haven't touched her since. I always keep the tender on and given the backfire assume I have compression spark and the voltage, any ideas?

    Re: bike won't start

When the bike got flooded on Sunday afternoon it may have shitted up the plugs. I think that in itself should not have been enough to foul the spark plugs, but I suspect the problem is related to fuel/air.

That said, I guess I'd pull the plugs and see how they look. I'm assuming the engine turns over at a normal speed but just doesn't want to catch, and you smell gas coming from the exhaust?

Thanks guys, bergs and I tore it apart and plugs are good she's getting gas starter is turning the chain and moving the shaft/pistons. Basically got as far into it as we could but decided due to time to send it out, still waiting on the word.

    How is the battery?
Fluid level and stored amperage all good?

Brand new battery, always on the tender and after a ride it's red for 15-20? then blinking green and solid green within the hour. When I try to start it it sounds like the starter is spinning twice as fast if that makes any sense.

When the starter is spinning - is it engaging? Hold your hand near the exhuast while turning it over and see if you feel air pulses. If you don't - the starter is not engaging. If you do - keep looking...

    Re: bike won't start

    Issue is motor-related.

Right now I'm at the point of checking valve clearance, timing/ tensioner issues, sticking valve(s), leak down test, etc.

This is bigger than fuel and spark, no doubt.

The engine seemingly has very little compression across all cylinders and I'm thinking it's related to the valve train in some way.

I'm open to suggestions so fire away but for right now it's time to dig into the motor a bit deeper....

Cam chain tensioner is VERY common on those. But USUALLY you hear a clunking/rattling noise coming from that area before it gets really bad. Almost sounds like a really loud tapping valve when it starts to go...

    Re: bike won't start

Well, after I get a small mirror and check the timing, the head's coming off for valve train inspection as well as cylinder wall inspection. Suzuki made this thing to be a real PITA to check timing on....the frame hides the intake cam timing marks just enough where a direct line of sight is impossible to acheive.

Whatever happened to this motor has not yet presented itself up to this point. I'm half-hoping that it jumped timing but am not yet convinced that has occurred.

I have gotten compression readings of no higher than 90 on all 4 jugs yet nothing else suggests there is an issue.....valve clearances were all fine (one was a bit tight but still acceptable), timing looks to be okay but, again, I won't know for sure until I get in there with a mirror.

I'd hate to suggest the pistons smacked the valves seeing how no "interesting" noises were audible by Greg but I'm left wondering how all 4 cylinders drop compression like that if the timing is found to be within spec.

    Re: bike won't start

If there was any kind of leak you wouldn't see 90 anything

Valve timming a tooth or 2 might do it though

try the oil down the sparkplug hole and compression
