Blah where is my cam chain tensioner?

i bought an APE manual cam chain tensioner because i had heard that CBR's frequently have CCT failures, and i was gonna install it while i had my fairings off for drilling frame slider holes, but then i cuoldn't find where the CCT was supposed to be. the APE tensioner only came with a piece of paper that was really vague about how to install it, and i looked pretty hard but couldn't find anywhere that looked like a CCT might fit in.

    WHERE IS IT???

all i know is that it's supposed to be on the right side somewhere....

Elaine, just wait and see if your cam chain tensioner lifter fails, then replace it if needed. Some CBR's go for 25,000 miles without a single problem.

If you overtension or undertension the camchain with the ape adjustable unit you could be looking for a new motor.

If you really want to know where it is, you need to remove the fuel tank and airbox. The tensioner lifter is on the upper right side of the motor, bolted into the cylinder head with two bolts.

In your picture it would be directly behind the weld halfway down the frame directly under the honda wing logo on the tank.

Maybe invest in a manual for doing your own wrenching.....like maybe a Haynes manual? They probably have one for your make, year and model!

    Go to

    http://www.cbrworld.net/global/cbrworld.asp

get yourself a login for that site 9free) and click on "tutorials"

They have a "how to" on the Ape cctl.

In the forums section you can also find a link to downloading a digital copy of the maintenance book

Blah where is my cam chain tensioner?

Thanks Derek!! That site is so cool! i am going to download the f4i service manual and then print the whole freaking thing out at work on monday

Damn, the guy who sold me the APE CCT had made it sound like it would be a really quick and easy swap-out. i guess i'll have to wait till a different day to install it. but, i think i should still install the manual camchain tensioner before waiting for the automatic CCT to fail, because if the camchain tensioner suddenly failed one day while i was on the highway and caused my engine to explode, i would be very unhappy

Don't worry, the Honda cam chain tensioner lifter gives you a few MONTHS of noise before causing any problems.

Plan on about 2 hours start to finish to install the ape one, and be very careful to adjust it correctly.

Blah where is my cam chain tensioner?

    Nope.

I am on my third camchain tensioner lifter this race season though.

The Ape unit is a camchain tensioner LIFTER. It is the lifter that causes the problem, not the tensioner.

The problem is that the race valve springs and cams seem to be putting too much strain on the camchain and braeaking the tensioner lifters. Kevin is working with Web Cams on a solution.

I don't want to go to a manual tensioner lifter as the stock part gets noisy but does not do any damage whereas the manual one in some circumstances can cause engine damage.

For the street I would probably get one but not for the race bike.

Interestingly, I have owned 7 CBR600s and this current one is the only one that ever had a CCTL problem.

Elaine....it is an easy install.....the adjusting has got to be right. As Degsy said....be careful!

Blah where is my cam chain tensioner?

Finally did my CCTL swapout this past weekend cuz the rattling was really getting to me... prob took about 3 hours to do everything. Honda did a good job of making the CCTL really inaccessible
I had a mechanic buddy of mine listen to the engine while the CCT was being adjusted... hope I didn't overtighten it!
when i took the automatic CCTL out, it was completely jammed. damn.

i'm getting soo much more power out of my bike now, it feels like a brand new bike!

If you are getting more power then you must have put the gold fuses in when you did the CCT!
