Undoing front sprocket nut with bike in gear

    Slow brain moment.

I forgot to loosen the front sprocket nut while the wheel and chain were still on the bike. Now the old chain is covered in cat poo and there's a new sprocket on the rear wheel.

How risky is it to torque against the nut while the bike is in a really high gear?

You will not hurt the engine if that's what you mean.
You may turn it, but you won't hurt it.

You could just install the new chain and tire and then losen the nut.

    It's a 520, I haven't checked if it will fit on the old 525.

I'm more worried about hurting the transmission internals.

Won't hurt it. You have about 1/7th horsepower. Your engine exerts a little more than that on the gears...... The 520 may fit on an older worn sprocket enough to hold it.

No you won't. What do you think all the power between the engine and rear wheel are transferred through?

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

    HAHA!!!

    YEAH!!!

BTW - Make sure the ignition is off and put it in 1st gear.
You could probably do it by hand depending on compression.

6th? dosen't matter, put it in gear and throw a board through the back spoke/swinger. Crank on the impact, make sure you are going in the losen direction, and check for a washer bent over the nut face (to lock in place).

With no chain on it, you'll want to usue 1st. The engine will have the most mechanical advantage over you in the lowest gear.

Try pushing a bike in 6th then try it again in 1st. You'll see.

Park your car on a hill in top gear, then in 1st. Tell me which gear allows gravity to overpower your engines compression.

I never use the transmission to do this...

Board through the wheel and a big bar on the end of a meaty wrench! Works every time and no screwing around the rear brake, transmission, etc.

Neither do I. But he has no wheel or chain on the bike.

I made the same mistake as you; it came off of the SV in first, by hand (a quick bump with a breaker bar). Easy. Maybe too easy?

I personally wouldn't put it in gear (no need to)....but if you just hit it with a impact gun its comes right off...

Pigman speaks truth. I personally don't like to run an impact against the tranny and motor.

I can see it now.....Jack has his wheel with a board sticking thru it and 15 feet away is his bike with the front sprocket still on it.

"Thanks for the suggestions, everyone, but the sprocket nut still doesn't come off...."
