Questions regarding upgrades to my SV 650

    Hey Guys,

I am thinking about upgrading a couple of things on my SV and need your help.

    1) aTRE (from another forum not sure what the rules are about linking to external forums so I won't).
One of the forum members (Brett? I can't find you on the forum) I met during the ride to Lions cafe mentioned that the jerky acceleration in lower gears on my sv can be fixed using this. I'm very interested in this mod at this point and I wanted some advice as to whether doing this is recommended. In general, a lot of people seem to recommend it and at this point I want to know if it has (may have) any side effects. Ex: Power to the engine cutting off mid ride.

    2) Exhaust.
After a car driver missing me by a few inches at around 80MPH on route 3, I have decided that this might be inevitable. I'm currently looking at the Delkevics as they seem to be the cheapest ones around.

Any info/criticism regarding these is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Doubt a TRE mid will make any difference for an SV650.

So are you selling it, keeping it, or fixing it?

Hey, Jim. PMed the link to the other forum. I wanted to sell it but I couldn't find another bike in a decent price range. I thought that I could let my sale thread die and maybe get archived. And in the mean time I might as well upgrade a few things on my bike

Heard good things about the TRE, I put one on right away....so I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes. But my bike is silky smooth when I don't get in the way.

Delkevics seem to be fine, but I have no personal experience there. You can go wrong getting rid of that stock bazooka though. Thing is HUGE.

M4 makes the nicest exhaust out there for our gen SV's.

If you are going to put the money into the bike, may as well spend it on worthwhile upgrades.

TRE isn't necessary. Mine is smooth as silk without it.

I'm with Lou... I dunno bout the TRE as I got my SV with a home made one already (I think )

And I'm also a fan of M4. Have a Leo myself, but the M4 looks PISSAH and is very popular with the SV crowd. It's not gonna save you from blind & deaf idiots on the highway though. Only the thing between your ears will save you from them.

PC and a good map will help smooth out the idle as it does in GSXR's also....

Was he behind you? Because otherwise he still won't hear you.

Try this instead. People will think you're a cop. By the time they figure out you aren't a cop, their ability to kill you will be greatly diminished.*

The other forum has the aTRE tool listed for ~$28 (shipping included). I'm still wondering if it is worth any trouble at all as a lot of members suggested. For now, I can't afford to worry about the looks of my bike and I'm trying to reduce my expenses to strictly what I need but if an M4 is much better / worth the difference then I will look into it..

This seems like a great idea and probably inexpensive if I can find someone that lives around Cambridge to help me with.

This sounds like a great idea! Thank you. I'll look into getting something that looks like this which I can wear over my jacket when riding on the highway.

Edit: He was behind me. I am almost convinced that he saw me in the last minute and floored it missing me by a few inches.

How much will a PC actually help these engines? I thought the mapping was pretty darn good right from the factory... at least until you went screwing with exhausts.

If it is, I've broken it and have some searchin' and editin' to do.

Try a TPS adjustment before you buy a TRE. TPS adjustment is free.

I'm another proponent of suspension Waaaaaaaaay ahead of motor on a SV.
PK has a good deal on a Penke right now.
Emulators and springs fix the front pretty nicely.

Chop the stock muffler in half, cheap and plenty loud....lighter too.

Re: Questions regarding upgrades to my SV 650

No need to fear..... (Brett) is here!

You can add aTRE to most bikes. There is a kid on the SVriders forum that makes really nice ones and sells them. Its worth the few bucks to have a nice neat one that plugs in. Otherwise you can just fire it yourself. If you just do a little searching on aTRE you can read up on how it works. You wont notice a HUGE difference, but that, along with a Throttle Position Sensor adjustment (again, you can find detailed instructions on svrider.com) the bike will be noticeably better with that "jerky" feeling. The TPS adjustment is tedious but fairly simple.

Other mods that are worth doing....

Get an R6 throttle tube. This has a shorter throw and allows for less wrist turn from closed to full throttle. This in itself helps miss that jerky initial moment through the gear changes.

Re: Questions regarding upgrades to my SV 650

ps. Listen to Randy O - Hes a god over at SVrider. lol

Other tips: You can try to cut your muffler in half and rebuild it. It does sound great, I did it myself. BUT IT ROYALLY SUXXS. Its such a pain in the ass. You can also debaffle the stock pipe, which is an ok temporary solution. but not grand.

For suspension... Dont waste your money on a new GSXR front end. Go find yourself a used pair of emulizers. These are valves that go inside the stock tubes and allow the oil to flow similar (But not exactly) like a higher performance GSXR. I can tell you from experience, it makes a huge difference at a fraction of the cost. (New GSXR front end can be near 800$)
